Healing Hashimotos Disease With Tong Ren - From "Incurable Disease" to Invaluable Gift

During the last few years, my body would go into crisis mode every few months. Out of the blue I would get excruciatingly tired, at times I was unable to get out of bed in the morning. After a few days the symptoms usually subsided and with the help of considerable amounts of willpower I would get on with my busy life.
My usual herbal and homeopathic remedies did not seem to have much effect and doctors couldn't find a cause. I was suspecting that the onset of Peri-Menopause was in part to blame, since I am approaching that ominous age category...

Last November, my husband and I traveled to India to spend a few weeks of study and contemplate with our teacher. When we go to India, we live in the foothills of the Himalayas with a community of about a hundred friends who have dedicated their lives to Meditation.

This year, a nasty cold/flu was working its way through the village. By the middle of our stay it caught up with us too. I got quite sick and was not able to recover during and even for weeks after the trip. I finally gave in and went to see y doctor who prescribed antibiotics. A this point I had been sick for more than 6 weeks, so I decided to take the antibiotics which I usually avoid at all cost. Another two weeks later I was as sick as before - if not worse. The doctor decided to perform more extensive tests, which resulted in the diagnosis of Hashimoto's disease.

Western medicine defines Hashimoto's as an incurable auto-immune disease. Anti-bodies attack the Thyroid, which then starts to under-function and create all the symptoms of Hypothyroidism. I had pretty much all of the symptoms, including extreme fatigue, dry skin, depression and hair loss.

The medical community's answer to this is to prescribe a synthetic hormone for life. This synthetic hormone is supposed to take over the function of the Thyroid (which will eventually cease to produce hormones). I was in no way ready for a treatment of drugs for life, and decided to see an Endocrinologist, an MD specializing in the Endocrine System, Glands and Hormones. It did not make much sense to me to try and replace the delicate balance of at least a half dozen hormones (which is what a healthy Thyroid does) with a single synthetic hormone in an arbitrary dose - for the rest of my life....

It seemed to me that the Immune System - the origin of the problem - might need some attention. The doctor's opinion was that nothing could or needed to be done for the Immune System. I pointed out that I had already two auto-immune issues going on in my body: eczema and allergies, and that I wanted to avoid having to deal with ever more dangerous aspects of a sick immune system, like cancer or rheumatoid arthritis for example. The doctor's comment to this was: "usually the Immune System does not work like that". When pressed, that was the only "scientific" answer she could give me. So here I was, with an "incurable" auto-immune disease, nasty symptoms and a prescription for a synthetic hormone for the rest of my life - not my idea of health and healing! It was clear that I would look for alternative ways to deal with this condition.

A few months earlier I had heard of Tong Ren and Tom Tam from a friend who had started to study with Tom. As soon as she told me about the philosophy, the method and its astonishing results I had a sense of being in the presence of something exceptional. It was an easy decision to contact Tom and see what he had to say about Hashimoto's. When I told him my diagnosis, he smiled and said: "oh Hashimoto's is easy, we can heal, no problem". Surprised by his absolute conviction and doubtlessness, I asked if he really thought this treatment could improve the symptoms. He answered in his characteristic mix of English and Chinese: "no improve symptoms, heal immune system, go back to normal".

And that's just what he proceeded to do. For the following months I saw Tom once a week. My friend, a student of Tom's, gave me a treatment of Tong Ren and TuiNa (Chinese deep tissue massage) every week and I proceeded to do Tong Ren self-treatment religiously every day.

Within the first week I started to feel better. Every day I had several hours where my body was functioning normally - I could actually work again. The next week it shifted to the opposite: I was doing well, aside from a few hours here and there when I needed to rest. By the third week I was functioning 70% of what I considered normal and it kept improving every week. By the fourth week I started to take training from Tom, for I knew that I wanted to learn as much as I could about Tong Ren.

Before I knew it, friends and clients wanted to get treatments from me, and within a few short months, Tong Ren has become an integral part to the work I do with my clients. The results speak for themselves, they are as spectacular as what I have experienced for myself.

After 2.5 months I had blood-work done again. Can you guess what the results were? The "incurable disease" had disappeared, my blood levels had gone from "off the chart" back to normal in less than 3 months!!!!

I call it a miracle, but the doctor thought I was probably misdiagnosed in the first place. She had obviously forgotten that the first time she looked at my initial blood-work she thought it could hardly get much worse...
I continue to take training with Tom and his students/teachers, I also attend his Guinea Pig classes as often as I can to learn as much as I can while devouring his books and improving my skills.

In the guise of an "incurable disease", Life has offered me an immense gift: the ability to learn and offer to myself and others a revolutionary healing method.

The Lion Dance - Ancient Art Form of China

The Lion Dance of China originated over one thousand years ago. It depicts the Asiatic lions of nearby India, some of which may have been presented to early Chinese Emperors as gifts. Lions in Chinese culture are guardian creatures, with statues of lions guarding royal palaces, homes of government officials and royal tombs.

There are many variants of the Lion Dance throughout Asia, including main land China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan and other countries. The Lion Dance in China can be roughly categorized into Northern and Southern. Lions consist of paper mache heads with the body being of fabric. The body as well as the head is also decorated with fur, feathers, and decorative paint. The Chinese Lion Dance is most usually done by two people per lion, unlike the Chinese Dragon Dance that can have ten or more people per Dragon.

The Northern Dance originated as entertainment for the imperial court. The Northern Lion is very shaggy and can be orange, red, yellow, or a combination of these colors. The Northern Dance is very acrobatic and is done mainly for entertainment. The Northern Dance many times depicts pairs of lions, sometimes a family of two large and two small lions.

The Southern Dance is more often performed as a ceremony to prevent evil and for good luck. The Southern Lion displays a wide variety of colors. It also usually has a mirror on the center of the forehead, very large eyes and a horn at the center of the head.

The Lion Dance can be performed at any time of the year, but is usually associated with the Chinese New Year. The Dance itself is very formalized, with a different ritual and routine for each country and area. But in most cases, the dance begins with the lion entering the town or village and visiting the local temples and ancestral halls to pay respects. Then it continues down the streets of the town to spread joy and good fortune to the people. During Chinese New Year, the lion dancers visit the storefronts of businesses for the 'picking of the greens'. The owner of the business will attach a red envelope filled with money to a head of cabbage or lettuce, and then tie it above the door of their shop. The lion will approach the greens, and 'eat' the greens but spit out the money. This part of the Lion Dance brings good fortune to the business owner and the lion dancers keep the money in the envelope.

The Lion Dance has developed a close relationship to the martial arts, specifically Kung Fu. Many Lion Dance troupes consist of members of Kung Fu clubs that practice the dance very hard to gain athleticism and proficiency.

This short essay only scratches the surface of the beauty, customs and variety of The Lion Dance, a centuries old part of Asian culture.

Terry Riley - Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band [part 1]

Minimalist pioneer Terry Riley was among the most revolutionary composers of the postwar era; famed for his introduction of repetition into Western music motifs, he also masterminded early experiments in tape loops and delay systems which left an indelible mark on the experimental music produced in his wake. Riley was born June 24, 1935 in Colfax, CA, and began performing professionally as a solo pianist during the '50s; by the middle of the decade he was studying composition in San Francisco and Berkeley, where among his classmates was fellow minimalist innovator La Monte Young. Influenced by John Coltrane and John Cage, he began exploring open improvisation and avant-garde music, and in 1960 composed Mescalin Mix, a musique concrète piece composed for the Ann Halprin Dance Company consisting of tape loops of assorted found sounds. By the early '60s, Riley was regularly holding solo harmonium performances beginning at 10:00 pm and continuing until sunrise, an obvious precursor of the all-night underground raves to follow decades later. After graduating Berkeley in 1961, his next major work was 1963's Music for the Gift, composed for a play written by Ken Dewey; among the first pieces ever generated by a tape delay/feedback system, it employed two tape recorders -- a setup Riley dubbed the "Time Lag Accumulator" -- playing a loop of Chet Baker's rendition of Miles Davis' "So What." The loop effect sparked Riley's interest in repetition as a means of musical expression ...

India- Why Diwali Is Celebrated?

Indians celebrate Diwali with great passion. They fire lots of firecrackers and eat sweets and wear new clothes. Why is Diwali so important in India?

Diwali is the day when it is said that Lord Rama returned to his kingdom Ayodhya after conquering Lanka. Lord Rama was asked by his father Dashrath to go to the wild forests for fourteen long years. In the forest Ravana, the king of Lanka, abducted his queen Seeta. Lord Rama was along in the jungle with only his brother Laxaman with him. In the forests Lord Rama met the monkey king Sugriva.

Sugriva sent monkeys around the world to search for mother Seeta. Finally Lord Hanumana found Seeta in the kingdom of Ravana at Lanka. He burnt Lanka and came back to inform Lord Rama about mother Seeta. Lord prepared a large army of monkeys and bears and invaded Lanka. Ravana was defeated. Vibhishan the brother of Ravana had joined Lord Rama in the battle. After defeating Ravana Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya his kingdom after fourteen long years.

Indian Hindus celebrate Diwali as a day of celebration. Candles are burnt in every home. People clean their homes and wear new clothes. Sweets are shared and people wish each other. Diwali is the biggest festival of India that celebrates the victory of good over the evil. Indians all over the world celebrate Diwali and it is also the beginning of new year as per the Hindu calendar.

Celebrating Goddess Lakshmi at Dhateras Festival

Come autumn with its lavish harvest and cool breezes, and for the people of India, its time to revel in various festivities. One of these festivals is the Dhanteras, also known as 'Dhantrayodashi' or 'Dhanvantari Triodasi' dedicated to the celebration of Goddess Laxmi. The festival, observed two days before Diwali is considered to herald the onset of the festival of lights. Hence, it can also be called Diwali eve. The festival usually comes every year in the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Ashwin (October / November).

The Dhanteras has special significance to the business community of India, as they pray to Laxmi, the goddess of wealth for good fortune and success in life. Amongst the business community the jewelers specially celebrate this festival in the most pompous manner in the gold market areas.

The festival is marked by colorful decorations and renovations in individual houses and business places to welcome Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. Women make colorful rangolis, alpana or floor patterns with small footprints of the goddess to symbolize her entry into their houses and business establishments. Some people light diyas, or traditional lamps throughout the night to ward off evil spirits. Doors remain open and neighbors or communities get together to share sweets and tiny lamps.

For additional luck and wealth, people also purchase gold and silver articles, new jewelry, car, and homes during this festival. Jewelers' shops remain open late into the night and are crowded throughout the day. A few devouts even fix dates for marriages on this day.

In south India, on Dhanteras evening, preparations are made for a sacred bath to be taken early next day - on Narakchaturdashi. Water pots are cleaned, venerated, decorated with marigolds and mango leaves and filled with water. They are heated next morning and the hot water is used for ritualistic baths for the destruction of sin and ignorance. Traditional sweets like laddus, chaklis, sakkaparas, and badam halwa are very much a part of the revelry.

There is an interesting legend related to this festival. The sixteen year old son of a certain king Hima was predestined to die by a snake bite on the fourth day of his marriage. But on that day, his wife kept him awake and laid all her ornaments at the entrance and went on telling stories and singing songs. As it was destined, god of death 'Yama' disguised as a snake tried to enter the Prince's chamber but was bedazzled by the lights of ornaments climbed the heap of ornaments and sat there listening the songs and next morning he went away without completing his mission. This day is hence celebrated as Yamandeepdaan and a diya is kept burning whole night on Dhanteras in the name of Yama.

Apart from fun, revelry and shopping, this festival is also the best occasion for buying and gifting exclusive Dhanteras gifts. Apart from gold and silver jewelry, other items like silver coins, pooja accessories, brass, metallic, fiber or wooden idols of gods and goddesses can be given out to near and dear ones. The business class forming a huge chunk of the expatriates from India sends Dhanteras gifts to India, to their acquaintances. Sending Dhanteras sweets to relatives and acquaintances is another way to celebrate this festival.

Nowadays, some financial institutions and corporate houses have also come up with the novel idea of corporate gifting to their employees and clients on the occasion of Dhanteras.

Puranas - Stories and Teachings From Ancient Times

Purana means stories or histories of ancient times. There are several subject matters in the puranas and they are classified into five sections. Their five sections are history, cosmology, secondary creation, genealogy of kings, and of Manvantaras or Manus. The Puranas are part of the Itihasas.

The Puranas were written to popularize the religion of the Vedas. They contain the essence of the Vedas. The aim of the Puranas is to impress on the minds of the masses the teachings of the Vedas and to generate in them devotion to God, through concrete examples, myths, stories, legends, lives of saints, kings and great men, allegories, and chronicles of great historical events. The sages made use of these things to illustrate the eternal principles of religion. The Puranas were meant, not for the scholars, but for the ordinary people who could not understand high philosophy and who could not study the Vedas.

Each purana gives prominence to a particular deity and therefore places all others on a subservient position. There are stories in the puranas to further explain the application of religion in life and to emphasize the importance of injunctions.

The Srimad Bhagavata Purana describes at length the appearance and activities of the ten main incarnations of Krishna. Other incarnations are also mentioned where necessary. The avatars appear to re-establish religious principles, to destroy those promoting irreligious life, and to enjoy pastimes with Their devotees. The ten Avatars are: Matsya (The Fish), Kurma (The Tortoise), Varaha (The Boar), Narasimha (The Man-Lion), Vamana (The Dwarf), Parasurama (Rama with the axe, the destroyer of the Kshatriya race), Ramachandra (the hero of the Ramayana who destroyed Ravana), Sri Balarama (brother of Sri Krishna), Buddha (the prince-ascetic, founder of Buddhism), and Kalki (the hero riding on a white horse, who is to come at the end of the Kali-Yuga).

Matsya saved Vaivasvata Manu and the Vedas when the waters of destruction overflowed the universe. Kurma used His shell as a pivot when the demigods and demons agreed to churn the ocean of milk to get the nectar of immortality. Varaha saved the world from the ocean below the universe by holding it on His tusk, when the world was thrown there by the demon Hiranyaksha. Narasimha appeared to save His devotee Prahlad from the oppression of his father, the demon Hiranyakashipu. Vamana appeared to trick King Bali by asking him some charity. Bali conquered the universe and Vamana restored it to the possession of the demigods.

Parasurama appeared to rid the world of the irreligious kshatriya kings. Parasurama destroyed the kshatriya race twenty-one times. Rama destroyed Ravana, who kidnapped His chaste wife Sita. Sri Balarama appeared to help Sri Krishna and removed the burden of the world by killing Kamsa and many other demons and kings. He also helped to re-establish religious principles and assisted Krishna to deliver the message of the Bhagavad Gita. Buddha taught compassion, vegetarianism and meditation to attain the Supreme Truth. Kalki will appear at the end of this age to destroy the sinful populace and to start again the golden age called Satya yuga.

The Jains have their separate Puranas. The most popular among them is the Mahapurana of Acharya Jinasena. A major part of the Jain Puranas can be found in Kannada literature. The Buddhist Purana, called Swayambhu Purana, is a major source of the history of the Kathmandu valley.

Tax Planning - Gift Tax - What is it?

What is a Gift Tax?

A gift tax applies to the transfer (by gift) of any property. You make a gift if you give property (including money), or the use of or income from property, without expecting to receive something of at least equal value in return. You may be making it if you sell something at less than its full value or if you make an interest-free or reduced interest loan.

As a rule of thumb, any gift is a taxable gift. However, there are exceptions to this rule. Generally, the following are not taxable gifts:

  • Gifts that are not more than the annual exclusion for the calendar year.

  • Tuition or medical expenses you pay for someone (the educational and medical exclusions).

  • Gifts to your spouse.

  • Gifts to a political organization for its use.

  • Gifts to qualified charities (a deduction is available for these amounts).

What is the Annual Exclusion?

An annual exclusion applies to each person to whom you make a gift. The annual exclusion as of 2007 is $12,000. Therefore, you generally can give up to $12,000 each to any number of people and none of the gifts will be taxable. If you are married, both you and your spouse can separately give up to $12,000 to the same person without making a taxable gift. These to individuals are not deductible on the donor's income tax returns.

According to the IRS, if you give someone money or property during your life, you may be subject to federal gift tax. The money and property you own when you die (known as your estate) may be subject to federal estate tax.

Most are not subject to the gift tax and most estates are not subject to the estate tax. Only about 2% of all estates are subject to the estate tax. You do not need to file a return unless you give someone, other than your spouse, money or property worth more than the annual exclusion ($12,000) for that year. Although a return may be required, no actual tax will become payable until the cumulative lifetime taxable gifts exceed the applicable exclusion amount. The donor is primarily responsible for the payment of them.

Tanjore paintings depict mainly the scenes from the ancient scriptures of Hindu religion and are one of the most famous style of paintings from south India. These paintings are unique due to the harmony of colors, the design, and the traditional techniques used with meticulous attention to details.

Tanjore derives its name from the capital of the Chola empire, which is Thanjavoor. This place has one of the beautiful temple of Lord Shiva-Brigadeeswara temple. This art form was developed with the patronage of the Maratha rulers in the eighteenth century. This type of art is famous for its ornamental relief work flourished with the patronage of the kings. The process of making a Tanjore painting requires dedicated skilled labour.

There are many stages during the making of these paintings. The canvas is usually a plank of teak wood, which is over a layer of cloth is pasted, which is applied on top to soften the board. The surface is smoothened by rubbing it with a smooth emery paper. The artist draws a detailed sketch on the board. Semi precious stones of different colors are used to decorate the painting. In earlier days, diamonds, rubies, and other precious stones were used.

To create a three dimensional embossed effect, layers of paste prepared from the glue and limestone are applied. After carrying out the detailed relief work, wafer like sheets of twenty two carat gold are pasted on top. Bright colors are used to fill up the remaining areas, then the main figures in the picture is large and the other figures may not be relative.

New techniques have been developed by skilled artist to keep this form of art alive. Chalk powder and modern synthetic pasting material have replaced the traditional materials. Modern day artists use chemical paints instead of vegetable dyes for colors and shades, but still enormous care is exercised in adhering to tradition while depicting the pictures.

The Rajput painter had inherited a legacy of mural painting as well as the art of the book, where a pictorial scheme with color as a principal means of visual articulation was designed. Conspicuously, he retained the color of complexions, costumes, and architecture as local, while playing up the tenor of the natural environment in low or high key, or changing them altogether from their normal hues. The strength of many Rajput paintings rests in balancing the tension of the two. It meant that the world of natural environment was conceived through the eyes of human images who inhabited it and not through an objective view from outside. It afforded the artist an opportunity to improvise a color scheme to match the mood of the image portrayed through the environment, approximating its fluctuations by raising or lowering the tenor of color.

Color is not viewed empirically as a consequence of refraction of light, since its use is not necessarily descriptive. This counters the notion of color being local to objects of optical perception so integral to impressionistic art. It refers to light metaphorically as a source that vivifies, heightens, or mellows the field of vision, but the light should be distinguished from daylight or artificial light with their contingent shadows. Dark and shadows as means of formal articulation and concealment so predominant a factor in European painting, are also conspicuously absent here.

The night scenes, except in the very late miniatures increasingly under the influence of European art, are usually rendered in full or filtered light of the moon or lamps with total visibility and night's presence indicated by conventional symbols. This distinguishes it from the representation of atmosphere in European painting as well. The Impressionist use of color to represent light and air is equally alien to Rajput painting. In the Impressionist scheme, the change of color meant a negation of browns and blacks as shadows and an aesthetic confirmation of the new theory of light according to the invention of the prism.

Grandson Chin2s exclusive gift for Asha Bhosle

Its hard to describe this ladys creative output over her multiple decade-spanning career as anything short of prodigious. In numbers, that means Asha Bhonsles the official record holder for being the most-recorded singer in history with 13000 recorded songs, as acknowledged by the World Record Academy. A little earlier, her album Precious Platinum made it to the Top 100 World Music Albums of all time. And shes now collaborated with her grandson Chin2 Bhonsle (anyone recall the Band of Boys?) and he sure is excited about it. So how did it come about? Ive been aware of his career and I know how tough it is, having been through the grind myself. In this field, there are so many singers with great voices. Very few actually get a break. At first, when he told me he wanted to make music, I scolded him, says Ashaji. And then one day, we were talking music and she just casually told me lets do a song together and then things developed from there into the album Sapne Suhane, pipes in Chin2. So were there any issues working together for the first time? Isko Hindi nahin aati thi, laughs Ashaji. Out on Times Music, theres a song off the album that features a 1950s Elvis Presley retro-rock look. And for Chin2, this collaboration comes in quite a cool lineage. Among her many foreign song sojourns (Code Red, Boy George, Backstreet Boys, etc) probably the biggest one of them all, is with the iconic REM frontman Michael Stipe. She recorded the song The Way You Dream with Stipe that was ...

Celebrate Raksha Bandhan - Send Raksha Bandhan Gifts to India With Rakhi and Sweets

According to ancient traditions, it is customary to have protection threads that are stimulated with sacred verses (Mantras) and sanctified with rice, durva grass etc.

This protection thread has that power to save from sins on the other hand it removes diseases.

Rakhi is celebrated on Purnima day in North India and north-west part. The word "Purnima" means a full moon night. In history when Aryans came to India they performed Yajnas before going on battlefield. It was done to gather blessings of the God. Before their departure to war front their sisters tied sacred thread or amulets to protect them and to remind them of their duties towards family and honoring their tribe and uplifting its position. In this way Raksha Bandhan was originated and our customs were made.

Nowadays, Rakhi is becoming world -famous, it's no longer only an Indian festival but its celebrated all over the world. In India, students in their respective schools ties rakhi and celebrate this festival and boys give chocolates to their sisters in return. In this way, those who don't have brothers and sisters get it and in this way they also enjoy and participate in this festival. Likewise, the celebrations are carried out at colleges also.

In India Rakhi preparations begins well in advance. Market place gets completely festive look by displaying colorful Rakhi's in shops. Girls usually start shopping early for Rakhi. They shop for new clothes and buy Rakhis, especially those sisters who needs to send to their brothers staying away. The sweet shops, the garment shops, gift shops, all are swamped with variety of products to draw attention of buyers. After Diwali, Rakhi is the festival when people have tendency to purchase.

For some people who live faraway from their brother or sister they send Rakhi and gifts through direct logistics or take the advantage of online services. Many websites like talash.com, rakhimela.com offers these services.

Visit Nepal 2011

Why Nepal Tourism? Nepal is a country lying between China on the North and India on the South. It is a landlocked country on the collision zone between two plates, so large mountain ranges are formed in the creasing including the Pahar Hill region and the Mountain region, both with large altitudes and populated valleys. Tourism is especially large in Mount Everest and a large amount of conflict has arisen there as we will study later. Mountaineers with ambitions to travel, view and climb the spectacular slopes come in their ten thousands. 39% of the GDP comes from agriculture; 76% of people use it as their principle employment. Services (which would include tourism) equal 42% and industry 21%. The lack of natural resources means that agriculture is the main primary industry, while tourism probably the main tertiary. Main exports are clothing, leather, jute goods and grain. There are lots of places to visit in Nepal. That is why people often term Nepal as "a place where there are more temples than houses". Similarly because of Gods and Goddesses we term it as a place where the number of gods and goddess is more than the population of people. Inside the Kathmandu Valley, there is lots of sight seeing. For example, you can go to Kasthamandap which was build of one tree, Pashupatinath of the capital and several other temples, historical places and monuments. However, one of the most amazing thing of the Kathmandu Valley is the excellent view of the valley from all the ...

Role of Dhanteras Wishes in Warding Off the God of Death

Dhanteras marks the beginning of the festival of Diwali. Buying gold or silver on this day is considered very auspicious and people traditionally perform their first Diwali Puja by worshipping idols of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi and then, gold and silver coins which are believed to usher in prosperity and wealth to the household and yes, ward off the God of Death - Yama. The tradition of buying gold and giving gold and silver coins, ornaments, Puja Thalis, and utensils as Dhanteras Gifts has its roots in a very interesting mythological legend.

It is believed that King Hima had a 16-year old son and the astrologers had predicted that he would die due to a snake-bite on the fourth day of his marriage. However, when the wife of the prince came to know of the revelation, she and the prince lit all lamps and diyas all over the palace and sang hymns and prayers to appease Yama - the God of Death. The wife also collected all her gold and silver in a heap on the entrance of her husband's bedroom as a gift for Yama in exchange of her husband's life. When Yama came in the form of snake late at night, all the light reflecting from the gold and silver ornaments blinded him and he turned away. Since then, it is considered very auspicious to send gold and silver gifts on Dhanteras in India.

Silver Diwali Puja Thalis; gold, silver and copper Shree Yantra and Kuber Yantras are some of the Dhanteras gifts that are believed to bring wealth and prosperity to the household. Apart from these, silver coins; gold coins; Diwali Diyas in sterling silver; and silver idols of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi are some of the popular Diwali Gifts you can send to your friends and family for Dhanteras 2010.

Wishing all Indians a wonderful Dhanteras which is being celebrated on the 3rd of November 2010.

DIY Gift Boxes

Shopping for the perfect gift for someone might be easy, but what happens when wrapping the gift turns out to be impossible? Well, this may be the reason that wrapping paper is a thing of the past. Most shoppers opt for a gift box instead. There's no wrapping paper involved, which saves you a lot of time while still finding a neat, elegant way to present your gift. DIY gift boxes are easy and simple to make and may even be better than buying a gift box.

Personal

The greatest appeal in making these boxes yourself is that you get to make it personal. It won't just be a box, like all the others that are discarded once the gift is taken out. The way you choose to decorate your gift box can convey a lot to the receiver. You can write on it, add pictures to it, share an inside joke or two, and make the gift giving experience personal and special. While all the other gifts came in generic boxes, yours alone will be unique.

Options

Making your own gift box gives you a lot of freedom. You can decorate it however you wish and you can customize it according to the taste and likes of the person receiving your gift. This will make the box almost as special as the gift it contains, while at the same time adding a lot of sentiment to it to make sure that the receiver knows that you put a lot of time and thought into it because you care so much about them.

Cost

You can create these boxes out of almost anything you find around your house. Most tutorials on the internet will teach you how to use a cereal box to make a gift box. But depending on the size and shape of your gift, you might need to get hold of other cardboard boxes.
This is much cheaper than buying gift boxes from stores as you are using boxes that you already own to make them, and you can decorate them without spending lots of money as well.

Environmentally Friendly

An added advantage is that you are doing your bit to keep the Earth green by recycling paper. If the receiver of the gift is a nature lover, then your best way to show that you know and care about their passions is to make your own gift box.

Cody Scholberg, a lover of gift giving, writes for the Gift Boxes Guide. Check out this article on jewelry gift boxes.
