Festivals of India - Diwali

This article is a continuation in the series of articles on festivals of India. Diwali is the most famous Indian festival. It is also known as Dipawali or the festival of lights. The reason behind the celebration of Diwali is that thousands of years back, Lord Rama and his wife Sita returned to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile after a great victory against Ravana, the asura king. Diwali is the celebration that occurred in Ayodhya then. Diwali generally comes in the month of October or November.

Diwali is celebrated for five days according to Hindus and each day has its own importance. People do preparations for Diwali in advance. They do shopping, prepare sweets and different dishes to welcome the guests. Everybody cleans their homes and decorates them with Diyas (candles), electric lights and colorful rangolis for the five days. There is a significance of Laxmi - the goddess of wealth on Diwali. On Dhanteras, the first day of Diwali - it is a significance to buy gold. On the 3rd day, people do Laxmi pooja along with pooja of lord Ganesha on main Diwali day (also called as Laxmi poojan). This is to please the gods for prosperity and happiness. On this day of Diwali, all family members wake up early in the morning and worship together. The females prepare sweets for the family and brighten their house with diyas and lights to welcome the goddess Lakshmi and prosperity.

At night, children and youngsters burn fireworks and firecrackers. The elders give gifts and blessings to children. The next day of Diwali is celebrated as the new year for Hindus. On this day everyone wears new clothes. Relatives visit each other and exchange gifts. The last day of Diwali is celebrated as Bhaiduj - this day is special for brothers and sisters as they express their love for each other. Sisters make special food items for brothers and brothers give gifts to her. This is the way the festival of Diwali is celebrated. In 2009, even president Barack Obama conducted Diwali celebrations in the White House.

Mens Kurta Pajama fromShalinCraft

Men casual clothing set is a gift to the Indian traditional wear by the great Mughals. In their custom, both men and women enjoyed kurtas and pajamas cut in long flowing panels. These elaborately embroidered kurtas with real gold and silver threads, weighed between 5 to 10 kilograms. With the change in time and fashion, modifications were made according to the comfort and affordability of people. Now the kurta pajama is more of a mans informal relaxing wear. Though the source of inspiration remains the same old Mughal fashion, many new changes are seen in todays style of Kurta pajamas. Among men, the most commonly worn kurtas are the coarse handloom kurta with high Chinese collar. They are either plain woven or the designs are woven in different colors. Comfort and easy wearing quality has made the kurta pajama universally popular. They are worn in winters as well as summers. Summer welcomes crisp and light cottons, while winter gives way to all heavy and thick materials. However, the handloom kurtas are worn in both summer and winter. The style popular among mens kurtas is the straight cut with side pockets. The prints commonly seen on this apparel in summers are block print and tie and dye of Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Birthstone Charts - Choosing Gifts with Traditional, Astrological and Celtic Birthstones

Birthstones make ideal gifts, but did you realize that there is more than one list of birthstones. If you combine the different birthstone gems, flowers and colors from the different lists the combinations can be bewildering. However, by choosing from the various birthstone charts we can create many unique gift ideas.

The first birthstone chart that most people consider is the traditional one. This has a different stone or stones for each month. For example the August birthstone is peridot and the September one is sapphire. The stones can vary greatly in value and this can make it difficult to find appropriate gifts. Especially for those born in April where the stone is diamond.

For those that are astrologically minded there is a list of birthstones by starsign. Using the zodiac birthstone may prove less expensive as the gems for April are bloodstone and sapphire rather than the traditional diamond.

There is even a Celtic birthstone chart that has a Celtic name for each division of the calendar and a gem for each. There is also a tree associated with each division. It may be an idea to give that tree as a gift, especially to a younger person so that they can watch it grow.

You can choose many types of jewelry containing the appropriate stones. You could give a mother a bracelet with the stones of her children. It is obviously best to stick with one list and find a gift of the appropriate value. It may be possible to use alternative gems or use gems of the same color if the actual birthstone proves too expensive.

There are flowers and colors associated with the traditional birthstone chart and these can be used to personalize the gift. In some cases they can be used to enhance the gift if a less expensive gem has been used.

As you can see there are many combinations of jewelry, birthstones, flowers and colors that you can use to create unique gifts. You will need to be careful that you choose appropriate gems or flowers for the correct birth date. You may want to give a note with the gift to indicate the care and thought that you have put into the choice.

Valentines Day Trivia and Party Games

Valentines Day party games and activities using the history of Valentines keeps with the party theme. Use the below information to create trivia questions, word find and scramble games.

Valentine was a priest who served during the 3rd century. February has long been a month of romance. February 14 was a day dedicated to the Roman Goddess Juno. Juno was the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses. The Romans also knew her as the Goddess of women and marriage. The celebration featured a lottery in which young men would draw the names of teenage girls from a box. The girl assigned to each young man in that manner would be his companion during the remaining year.

Saint Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families; he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine thought this degree injustice. He defied the emperor and performed marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, the Emperor ordered that he be put to death. Valentine sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine had a platonic love for the jailer's daughter who visited him often during his confinement. Before his death, it is said he wrote her a letter, which he signed "From your Valentine," an expression we still use today. Cupid, another symbol of the holiday, became associated with it because he was the son of Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty. Cupid often appears on Valentine cards. If Cupid shoots you with his arrow you're sure to fall head-over-heels in love.

Try this fun Valentines Day party game:

THE CHOPSTICK IN THE HOLE: With a chopstick tied to each guys waist and hands behind his back, they try to put the chopstick into a whole (can be a paper cup). A more mature version would be to tie the cup to a female participant.

Valentine party supplies like paper plates, napkins, and cups are a nice way to complete a Valentine Party Theme. Using party decorations like Valentine heart balloons as a centerpiece can also double as party prizes. Party favors like Valentine candy, cards, or glow jewelry suit a Valentine Party Theme.

Rakhi Celebration With Unique Gifts

Raksha Bandhan (Rakhi) is a traditional Indian festival in which sisters tie a sacred thread of protection around their brother's wrists. By accepting a thread from his sister, the brother is bound to protect his sister from harm.

The sanctity of the thread that the sister ties to a brother's hand makes the relationship glow with noble thoughts and blessings of love, devotion and duty of the brother towards his sister.

People in India celebrate this festival on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Shravana. The frail rakhi thread is considered stronger than iron chains in India as it binds brothers and sisters in a bond of everlasting trust and love. Sisters apply 'tikka' on their brothers' foreheads and brothers reciprocate by giving them gifts and tokens of cash.

In turn, sisters buy gifts and sweets for their brothers. The meaning of this festival has expanded, so those who do not have brothers tie rakhis to others and initiate a new brother-sister relationship that usually continues for a lifetime.

This festival also has an important social significance, because it underlines the notion that every one in society should live in harmonious coexistence with each other as brothers and sisters in society. The best way forward towards attaining this social goal is to initiate a lifetime bond that makes men and women, young and old alike with pious feelings towards each other.

The aim of Rakhi is to achieve a harmonious coexistence for everyone and removal of social strains. Simultaneously, it strives to cultivate noble thoughts in society and imbibe feelings of brotherly as well as sisterly love for members of society.

The festival is rooted deeply in the psyche of every Indian since the past. Legend says that Rajput and Maratha queens have send rakhis even to Mughal kings who despite their personal differences, rose to protect them from harm.

Another story has it that Lord Indra - the ruler of the heavenly realm, was almost on the verge of losing a long drawn battle against the demons. Indira's wife came forward to help her husband and tied a talisman on his wrist. This helped Lord Indira win the war against the demons.

Yet another legend has it that Lord Yama, the God of death had a sister Yamuna. On every "Shravan Purnima", she would tie a rakhi on her brother's wrist. Since then it became customary for sisters to tie a rakhi on their brother's wrist.

There are a lot of rakhis available in the market encompassing both traditional and modern themes. These include thread rakhis, moti (pearl) rakhis, silver rakhis, silver coin rakhis and more. There are rakhis even for children such as chocolate rakhis, Superman, Batman, Pokemon, Krish, Mikey mouse rakhis, and so on.

On this day, brothers and sisters send cards and gifts to each other. Traditional gifts mark the occasion. These gifts include rakhi baskets with ethnic stuff, fashion jewellery, gift hampers, ethnic dresses like sarees, kurtis, Punjabi suits, dresses and dress material, traditional puja thalis, Indian Sweets like Kaju Katli, barfi, pendas, boondi laddoos and such, dry fruits such as cashew nuts, raisins, almonds, pistachios, and such.

Other gifts include apparels, watches, perfumes, etc other due to the influence of the present day modern culture. On this occasion, brothers also give a token of money as appreciation for their sisters. Sisters also purchase return gifts for their brothers, which includes men's items such as perfumes, kerchiefs, sunglasses, watches, mobiles, shirts, trousers, wallets, belts, apparels, electronic items, and such.

Saint Valentine's Day - Romance in the Digital World?

Valentine's Day is fast approaching and many are thinking deeply about the perfect present for their loved one. With the digital revolution some are seeking the assistance of artificial intelligence at web sites like intellectGift.com to help them choose a gift that would suit their partner. It perhaps says something about our increasing dependency on digital technology that people are turning to artificial intelligence to help them choose a gift.

According to some scholars the tradition of Valentine's Day dates back to a priest named Valentine who continued to perform marriage ceremonies in violation of a ban by the Roman Emperor Claudius. The Emperor banned marriages because he thought that if men were not married, they would more likely join the army. The holy priest was caught during one ceremony and was thrown in jail awaiting the punishment of death. Many young people came to the jail to visit the priest. They threw flowers and notes up his window, because they wanted him to know that they, too, believed in love. Saint Valentine suffered martyrdom on the 14th day of February, about the year 270.

This tradition of celebrating Valentine's Day has now blossomed into a huge global commercial event. While Internet resources and artificial intelligence may appear to be too impersonal or technical to be part of this romantic occasion, people are turning to them in increasing numbers. Perhaps it is because the Internet is a reflection of what people are thinking and what they need. The Internet allows many people to connect to others for advice on what they need at any given moment, including picking a gift for Saint Valentine's Day. Whether it is through blogs, online newspapers or virtual worlds the content for choosing a gift comes from people who have gift ideas and are now able to share them with others online.

In his discourse for World Communications Day 2010, Pope Benedict XVI emphasizes that it is person behind the computer which gives the online world its richness. In speaking about the contribution of priests to the world of digital communications, he states that it is the priestly heart which "will give a soul to the fabric of communications that makes up the Web". In this light we can turn to the digital world on Saint Valentine's Day without fear of losing the romance of the occasion.

How to Survey Your Customers in Four Simple Steps

One of the keys to success in business is to know what your customers want, so you can deliver it.  But unless you've perfected your Vulcan mind meld skills, the chances are good you could use a bit of help figuring out just what it is that your customers want.

What's the easiest way to do that?  Ask them!

Here are the four simple steps to follow to create an effective customer survey.

1) Figure Out Your Goals
What are your goals in surveying customers?  If you're a crafter or seamstress, you might be focused on finding out which products and sizes are most popular, which seasons people are interested in different items, or what other items customers might like.  If you're a coach or consultant, you might want feedback on a new program you're considering.  If you ask customers about the content, title, and format before you put all that time into creating your program, you'll be able to better deliver help to your clients and get better results.

2) Create Your Survey

Here are three tools you can use to create your own online survey.  With each one, you just type in your questions, choose the type of answers, then at the end it gives you a page you can link to.

  • Google Docs (free)

  • Free Online Surveys (free for up to 20 questions & 50 responses)

  • Survey Monkey (free for up to 10 questions & 100 responses)

What should you ask?  Here are some tips to help you decide what to include and what not to include in your customer survey.

Privacy: Keep in mind that the more personal information you ask for, the fewer responses you'll get.  You may want to consider anonymous responses to allow customers to share honestly.

Time: Fewer people will take time to finish a longer survey.  Keep it short and sweet so customers can zip through it quickly.

Comments: Be sure to include a form to allow comments/questions/miscellaneous feedback.  Someone might have some great idea or suggestion for you that doesn't fit in an answer to your questions but they'll share it if you add a box for "Any Other Comments or Great Ideas You'd Like to Share?"

Free Gift: To promote responses you may also consider offering a free gift to those who respond.  It could be an ebook or special report, or a coupon for a future purchase.  If you decide to give out a free gift make sure that it's either accessible from the last page of the survey, or that you collect email addresses during the survey so you can send out the gift.

3) Share It and Collect Responses

Once you've created your survey, share it.  If you want only responses from those who've already purchased from you, send it out to your customer list.  If you want a wider range of responses, post on your website, your blog, social networks, etc.

4) Evaluate the Feedback

Keep in mind that you don't need or want to radically re-design your product or website based on just one response to your survey.  Watch for overall patterns and trends in the responses.  If a fair percentage of your responses have the same suggestion, then it's worth taking time to consider.

You may also find the responses helpful in generating ideas for articles, newsletters, blog posts, and more!

Now, get out there and collect some feedback to help your business move in the right direction!

Unique Gift Ideas For Holi

Holi gifts, or for that matter gifts to commemorate any social occasion is a matter of measured choice. While your whim or fancy in choosing a gift can work out lucky for you, more often than not, the receiver of the gift praises your choice because it is polite to do so, and because she or he wants to see you happy. So, to pick up that real winning gift from the confusingly huge number of options is both an art and a craft. Your choice of gifts should not only express your own personality, but must also take into account the receiver's choice as well as what is culturally right on the day of Holi.

For example, I have never seen the color "black" associated with Holi except of course the griming of faces with oil and the soot from Holika Dahan bonfires. But that, is an entirely different affair. Bright colors are most often associated with Holi and yellow and red receive special favor with Vasanti or Basanti (cream color with orange shade) being the culturally perfect color for Raslila the actual color festival. Vasanti is the color of Spring which is named Vasanta in Sanskrit, and Holi, or Raslila, or Dolyatra are all forms of the original Vasanta Utsav, the Spring Festival. So, without any doubt the presence of the Vasanti color on any presents has cultural significance.

Holi gifts are as numerous as artisans and manufacturers. Of course, a nice Pichkari and colors are welcome, but they are more Holi equipment than gifts, unless the Pichkari is a work of art and can grace a living room as a curio or art object. What would you prefer as a gift idea? Remember that the main reason of the color festival of Holi is the exchange of love between Radha and Lord Krishna. Holi symbolizes love, and laddus, though significant and symbolic, may not be sufficient Holi gifts.

Since sweetmeat packages and flowers are an invariable part of every Indian social occasion, nicely gift-wrapped packages of sweetmeat are of course good presents that are socially acceptable. But, that is more cultural than individual. When you are thinking of a unique gift, it must stand out from the crowd and draw comments. Even a single white rose can be a great option and more appreciable than that non-stick tawa your wife had been eyeing for quite some time. Utility oriented articles really do not fit in gracefully as Holi gifts but things of art and beauty are in tune with the festival of love and colors.

A Holi gift, of course, does not need to be tangible. Taking your family out for a dinner can also work as an appreciable gift. It's not all about necklace or bracelet, nor are they about cars or houses, or money. Holi gifts are more about love and your appreciation for your family members. So, visit some malls and online gift stores, keep a lookout for things that may impress and cause joy, and find that unique Holi gift that will speak a million words.

And just a parting warning, when choosing your Holi gift, please keep away from Baltis and Handis. While they will surely prove to be quite unique as Holi gifts, the effects may not be what is desired.

Mother's Day Gifts Are Part of Modern Life in India

Mother's Day in India is celebrated at homes with as much reverence and gusto as anywhere else in the world. In India, as a secular nation, mothers and mother goddesses have been worshiped for generations. People in India have recognized motherhood and the power of motherhood in many religious forms including the form of traditional Hindu Goddesses. Especially, in eastern and central parts of the country the worship of Durga, or Kali, or other forms of the Mother like Basanti, or Jagaddhatri, form principal social and religious occasions. Hindu festivals related to Mother worship are of a much greater magnitude than the worship of any male deity except the major deities like Shiva, or Vishnu or major avatars of the Hindu pantheon like Rama or Krishna.

It is interesting to note that among the Parvi community of Konkan and Mumbai regions of Western India, there is an indigenous time-honored culture of celebrating Mother's Day in August. This festival is called Pathare Pravu, meaning Mother's Day. The festival follows the legend of a mother whose children never used to live beyond the first year of their birth. The Pathare Pravu Mother's Day celebration is ancient in nature and thousands of years older than the present US and international culture of celebrating.

There was also the culture of Mata Tirtha Aunshi (Mother's Pilgrimage Fortnight) in North Eastern India where in April, in the Krishna Paksha of Baisakh month, pilgrimage is made to Mata Kunda to worship living mothers and mothers who have left the earth. However, after the formation of post-partition India, this custom, though still very strong in Nepal, is existent only among the Nepali and Gorkha communities in India. The reason of this being that Mata Kunda itself now falls in a separate country, Nepal. This festival is born around a legend of Krishna and his mother Devaki.

Motherhood is universally recognized and revered in India in both religion and mysticism. Little surprise then, that the international, or rather U.S. culture of celebrating Mother's Day on the 2nd Sunday of May, has found ready acceptance in India.

Mother's Day Gifts, Greeting Cards, mementos and special services as well as sales offers are available internationally following the US tradition of celebrating the day on the 2nd Sunday of May. Suppliers and artists from all over the world, whether it be from China, or India, or Turkey or from US itself, target the 2nd Sunday of May as Mother's Day with their products/gifts. This happens because US is one of the biggest markets for consumer goods.

Thus, for people all around the world, celebrating the day becomes convenient due to the huge numbers of gifts, etc., available concurrently in the market. Indian citizens being no exception, they accept the convenience offered by market dynamics and on-market abundance of Mother's Day gifts. Thus, this day on 2nd Sunday of May is celebrated in households around the country. This year, Mother's Day has fallen on 9th May, 2010.

Mothers and motherhood, without any doubt deserve the most profound respect and reverence. Mothers bring us to earth, suffer to give birth to us and suffer to bring us up. Mothers always act selflessly to protect and upkeep their children, and mothers ensure continued existence of the human race. Every religion upon earth and every culture worships mothers and motherhood. In India, it is in the form of Mother Goddess worship, in Christian lands it is in the form of the worship of Mary, mother of Christ. In modern culture of the digital age, mothers are worshiped on this day, the 2nd Sunday of May.

Oldest Animal Species Mating Aldabra Tortoises

The Aldabra giant tortoise (Geochelone gigantea) is one of the largest tortoises in the world. The average male weighs around 550 lbs. and some have weighed as much as 793 lbs. They are strong, powerful animals that can ram through fences. They gather in herds on open grasslands. They also dig underground burrows to keep cool. Great Holiday Photos - Don't Point, Don't Shoot!

How many times have you come back from a holiday or vacation and found yourself flipping despondently through a sad group of photos where nothing seems very distinct, or looks anywhere near as good as it did in real life?

You could dismiss yourself as a lousy photographer and leave it at that - OR you change your ways -- and henceforth be known as the Mister/Miz Cool of Photodom!

Here's a basic problem: many people, because they have a "point and shoot" camera, think that all they have to do is.... point and shoot. Let us shake our heads sadly at these people. Because by taking just a little time to follow these few pointers, you can easily turn your holiday photos from woeful to WOW!

  1. Fill your frame. One of the most common errors is to have your subject too far away. Don't try to get a whole building in the shot. Instead go for an ornate doorway or window, or part of a steeple, etc. You'll get lots of interesting detail that way. In the case of multiple objects or people, decide what is most interesting to YOU and make sure your intended subject is much closer to the camera than everything else, and let the rest form a background. But TAKE YOUR TIME! Look carefully in your viewfinder or LCD screen to ensure that you are not chopping off anything unintentionally.

  2. Put your light source behind you. Never take pictures into the sun, unless you don't mind everything in silhouette. But if you can't avoid it, you can work wonders by using your flash to illuminate the object or person in the foreground, provided they are no more than 4 to 5 feet away.

  3. If you try to get both shaded and sunlit areas in one photo, usually one or the other will not look good - either the shade will be dark and underexposed, or the sunny area will be washed out. This is not always easy to avoid on bright sunny days, but with intermittent cloud you can often get a much better picture just by waiting - cloud cover gives much more even lighting.

  4. Avoid taking holiday photos through the windows of fast moving vehicles - you'll end up with a lot of blur in the foreground. And don't shoot through windows at all if they are dirty or clouded - your picture will have the same effect!

  5. When shooting at night, or in very low light, remember that most flashes have an effective range of 6 to 7 feet at most. But don't get too close to your subject with a flash either, or you'll get a washed out effect. Four to five feet is usually optimum, but check your camera manual.

  6. If your digital camera has an option that allows you to take several photos in quick succession by holding the button down, this can be especially useful for photographing objects that won't stay still, such as children or animals - later on you can choose the best, and delete the rest!

Just these few tips can give your holiday photos that drool factor that lesser beings can only wish for. Practice makes perfect, so don't get discouraged - keep at it, and if possible, invest a little time and try these techniques at home BEFORE you go away.

Decorating for a Victorian Christmas

Berry Manor Inn owner, Cheryl Michaelsen wouldn't admit it, but with all the research she's done on Victorian tradition for the inn many consider her an expert, especially when it comes to celebrating a Victorian Christmas. Her Victorian-style inn offers the ideal backdrop to showcase venerated Victorian traditions throughout the year. However during the holidays the pomp and hospitality of this bygone era is resplendent in what Down East Magazine has referred to as "The WOW House". Visit Berry Manor Inn during Historic Inns of Rockland, Maine's Holiday House Tour held each year on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, where among other ideas, you'll learn first hand all about many Victorian traditions of yesteryear. The Holiday House Tour is part of Rockland's Festival of Lights, and Historic Inns of Rockland will feature workshops including Gingerbread House Making, Victorian Customs for Christmas, and Package Wrapping Workshops, along with refreshments and tours of lovely historic inns during this event, held from 1pm to 4pm on the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

During the Victorian era, commonly considered from the mid 1800's to the early 1900's, strides were made in communication and industrialization making it possible for traditions from other countries to be popularized and even mass-produced in the United States. Embedded in the Victorian psyche was the need to keep up and surpass friends' and family expectations for socializing, decorating and succeeding in general. Thus, creating an environment where others could watch, socialize and share traditions of others was key. Understanding this, Berry Manor Inn has captured many of the Victorian traditions to share and celebrate with guests throughout the holiday season.

Peppermint pigs - The pig was a symbol of good health, happiness and prosperity in Victorian times. Thus, even today as tradition dictates, after the holiday meal, the candy peppermint pigs are broken and shared by all in hopes of good fortune. First created in Saratoga Springs, NY, Berry Manor Inn purchases Peppermint Pigs for guests from SaratogaSweets.com, which claims to be the only place still making these Victorian confections, since 1880.

Hanging a pickle on the tree - According to the Victorian myth an orphan wandered into a pub whereupon he was kidnapped and thrown into a pickle barrel.

St. Nick came to his rescue, making the pickle a symbol of good luck. It was German tradition, popularized in Victorian times, to hang a pickle ornament on the Christmas tree for good luck.
The child that was first to find the pickle was rewarded with an extra present. Look carefully, and you will find the pickle ornament on the tree at Berry Manor Inn.

Christmas crackers - These whimsical toys were one custom that dawned during Victorian times. In the 1860's a London confectioner designed a tube shaped object and filled it with sweets and toys, then tied it at both ends and offered it for entertainment at the dinner table. Later, inspired by the flames of the hearth, a popping noise was added , lending to the name "crackers". In keeping with tradition, usually a hat and candy are still hidden within the crackers. You'll find a basket of Christmas crackers as gifts for guests at the Berry Manor Inn throughout the holidays.

The Christmas Maze - In keeping with another Victorian tradition, Berry Manor Inn sets up a "maze" game in the Children's Room, replicating how many Victorian children found their Christmas treasures. Tradition holds that each child was assigned to a different color ribbon, and told to follow it through the maze of intertwined ribbons to their gift. The Christmas Maze is available for viewing at Berry Manor Inn during the Holiday House Tour.

The Upside Down Christmas Tree - It was a common tradition in Victorian times to display a "table top" tree in the parlor. Often the trees were too big for the table so the top would be cut off and hung upside down in another part of the house. This afforded the opportunity to have another tree to display the many handmade treasures collected over the years. Look for the upside down tree in the entry to Berry Manor Inn.

When asked about some ideas for holiday decorating with a Victorian flair, Cheryl Michaelsen has plenty of advice, ranging from mantles of the mansion to tree décor.

Tips for Victorian Decorating:

o Cover the top of the mantle with boughs of greens. Cluster and arrange pineapple, oranges, apples, pomegranates and berries or grapes to create beautiful color. Use boxes or styrofoam (hidden by the greenery) to arrange the fruits at different heights. Embellish with pearly beads, tassels and ribbon.

o Set up a grouping of five to seven like-colored pillar candles on assorted blocks of wood at different heights on the mantle. Wrap greens around them and lay white lights throughout the greens. Concentrate the string of lights through and around the candles to create a glow of light. This is particularly attractive if you have a mirrored mantle or place an antique mirror on the mantle behind the candles.

o A beautiful simple mantle arrangement can be created by displaying gold-sprayed pine cones set on greens with white lights mixed throughout. For a monochromatic display, lay gold lamay ribbon across the top with assorted loops and dips, or add several gold cherubs set in amongst the green. For a burst of color add a grouping of red cardinals, peacock feathers or a spray of silk roses off to one side of the mantle.

o You can create a beautiful Victorian Christmas tree with garlands of pearls, silk roses, feathered birds, clip-on candles and a predominance of burgundy, pinks and cream reflected in the bulbs and repeated throughout the design.

o Don't pass up the front stairway as an opportunity to show off Victorian decor. This is often one of the first things guest see, and offers the perfect setting for your garland, thick burgundy ribbons, greenery and ornaments.

BEAUTIFUL PHOTOS AVAILABLE.

Planning Photo Christmas Cards Early - Top Reasons to Start Now

The last thing you might want to think about at this time is photo Christmas cards.  The holidays still seem far away. So,  what's the rush? Why should you bother to start planning now?  Here are the best reasons to begin early.

The early bird catches the...DISCOUNT.

Many Christmas card companies, especially those online, offer a price break to those smart shoppers who think ahead. Those businesses are overwhelmed with orders closer to the holidays, so quite a few of them reward customers who plan in advance. Shop around online and you'll find you can save money by beating the crowd. Just think of the satisfaction you'll feel when you know you got a bargain and didn't pay full price.

Time to browse.

Most people take their pictures first and then select the design for their photo Christmas cards later.  A better idea can be to choose a holiday greeting you love and then take the photographs that will fit into the design.  That way you'll know if you're going to need one portrait or multiple snapshots.  Based on the layout,  you'll see if the pictures should be close-up or with more background  You'll be able to visualize what the photos should look like to fit into the format of your selected card.

But finding that great design that you absolutely love can take time.  If you wait until the last minute, you may have to settle.  This way, you can look around until you find something that is unique and reflects your family's personality.  You'll have the time to check beyond the first page of your favorite search engine results to see what a wide variety of companies offer.

Better photo opportunities.

Now is the time to take advantage of the nice weather, sunshine and outdoor activities  Yes, you could wait until it gets colder and huddle the kids in front of the fireplace with matching sweaters and not a hair out of place.  But nothing compares to the charm of pictures of your children having fun.  Take your camera with you everywhere and record all your family's joys. Use natural lighting, taking spontaneous snapshots rather than anything overly posed.

That doesn't mean you can't group your kids together while you're out doing stuff and ask them to smile for a quick family snapshot.  But they'll be naturally more relaxed than if they were to sit down for a more formal picture taking session.

One less stress during the holiday season.

So, you planned ahead and took the time to find unique photo Christmas cards.  You got some great family pictures, ordered your holiday greetings early and even got a discount.  Now, take it one step further, and address the envelopes, put the cards inside, place a stamp on the outside and seal.  The only thing left to do is put them in the mailbox when it gets closer to the holidays.

With Christmas shopping, decorating and all the other seasonal things that need your attention, this is one thing you won't have to worry about any longer.  By planning ahead, you will have less to do when the holidays approach.  You might even get a few moments to relax and enjoy the compliments, when your family and friends tell you that this was the best photo Christmas card you ever sent them.

Linda Kling, as the owner of www.photo-party-favors.com, has offered ideas to people planning parties and celebrations since 1992. She recommends these photo Christmas cards. Visit her website for free printable Christmas gift tags, quotes, party recipes, more.

Importance of Rakhi Festival in India

India is the land of festivals. Though all the festivals have their importance; Rakhi stands out as a unique gift of Indian culture. The simple threads of Rakhi symbolize the sacred love of brother and sister. When a sister ties a Rakhi on her brother's wrist, her sentiments flow towards her brother that he should get each and every happiness. At the same time the brother thinks on the same wavelength that at in any cost he would protect the honor of his sister.

It is immaterial whether a sister or a brother is in the same village, town or city in India or USA, Canada, Australia, UK. Personally tying a Rakhi on her brother's wrist or sending online Rakhi Gifts, always strengthens affection for her brother. The same way when a brother personally gives or send online return gifts to his sister, his unuttered vow to protect her is revealed. So Rakhi is the confluence of true and perfect feelings of siblings.

Hindu month of Shravan (August) has a number of festivals. Rakhi, falling on the full moon day, is one of the major festivals of the month. Rakhi festival is also known in different parts of India as Kajri Purnima (Kajri Navami) in North India, Nariyal Purnima (Coconut Full Moon) in Western India and Shravan Purnima in South India. Besides being the festival of sister and brother, Rakhi or Raksha Bandhan is known by different names like Vish Tarak (the destroyer of venom), Punya Pradayak (the bestower of boons), and Pap Nashak (the destroyer of sins).

Importance of Raksha Bandhan: Rakhi is a traditional Indian festival celebrating the bond of love between brother and sister. The society and traditions allied with this festival are exclusive and very special in themselves. Every part of India celebrates Rakhi in its own way along with its rich culture, tradition and pooja.

Rakhi Festival in Agra: In Agra the Rakhi Festival is very important and can be seen in almost all house. Colorful Rakhis in amiably decorated Thalis greet brothers as the daylight of Rakhi touches Agra. People of Agra are very colorful and traditional in their celebrations of Rakhi Festival. The sisters and brothers also dress up in bright colored clothes and then the rituals of Rakhi are performed.

On the occasion of Rakhi, Delhi takes on a very colorful look with the day celebrated in full mood & strength. From the eve of Rakhi only sisters line up for attractive Mehandi designs. With the very morning of Rakhi, both brothers and sisters dress up in colorful new clothes and the sisters fast till the customs of Rakhi are complete. After the customs the whole family joins in for a family lunch and enjoys some quality time together.

Rakhi Festival in Bangalore: For the southern part of India, Rakhi is not a key festival and so as in Bangalore. Although there's mixture in culture and tradition, Rakhi festival is an important part of the Bangalore city. On the day of Rakhi, people dress up in new clothes. People of Bangalore celebrates Raksha Bandhan with ease; the traditional Rakhi Thread & the Puja connected with this day.

Rakhi Festival in Chandigarh: Rakhi is vital festival in Chandigarh. On the day of Rakhi brother and sister get up early and wear new clothes. Sister put Mehandi on her hand and keeps fast till the ceremony of Rakhi. If you are in Chandigarh then you can certainly not miss out the hustle-bustle of Raksha Bandhan.

Rakhi Festival in Kolkata: Raksha Bandhan in Kolkata is a little bit different from Northern India. Rakhi is a festival, which is originally a tradition of Northern India. In Kolkata this tradition is popularly celebrated as Bhai Dhooj, similar to Raksha Bandhan. Although Rakhi is not the major festival of Kolkata still like the other parts of India this day is celebrated with bliss and happiness. People in West Bengal also tie the Rakhi thread around the wrist of her brother. This is accompanied by the Chandan Tilak as well.

Rakhi Festival in Mumbai: Bombay now known as Mumbai - The heart of India is known as a city that neither stops nor sleeps. When the festival of Rakhi comes, Amchi Mumbai takes on a colorful continuum of images with Rakhis, Rakhi Gifts & Rakhi Return Gifts flooding the market. All can find a wide variety of Rakhi with latest designs & styles in Mumbai. Even clothes are especially tailored for this occasion. Taking this feeling of brotherhood and harmony aboard, Rakhi is today celebrated with equal passion and ecstasy around the world. The Indians living abroad haven't forgotten their culture & traditions at all and celebrates Rakhi Festival with full enthusiasm.
