The Perfect Gift for your parents in India

Mumbai, December 19, 2006 - My friend has a problem. Christmas is here and like everyone else he is thinking of goodies and gifts to surprise his parents back in India.

What would make a perfect gift for the perfect parents? Flowers, chocolates, an item of trivia or, utilities or, luxury. The list goes on and on. But he wouldn't go for any of this. He wanted to gift them his care - a health insurance.

I thought it was an excellent idea. What is it about Mum and Dad that concerns us the most - their health and well-being? And what are we doing to ensure that?

Gifting a health insurance policy certainly made a lot of sense. But which policy should he buy and how?

Most of the insurers offer regular health insurance policies. Only ICICI Lombard has a specific Health Insurance plan - Rishtey - for NRIs' parents in India.

What is the benefit?

All health insurance policies provide cashless hospitalization benefit across India in case of an illness and accident. The similarity, however, ends here. Each insurer has its own set of coverage terms and conditions.

While most insurers in India avoid issuing policies to senior citizens and impose restrictions on the entry age or sum insured, Rishtey allows entry up to the age of 65 years and offers two sum insured options - Rs.200,000 and Rs.300,000 - with continuous coverage for 2 years.

A health policy will cover for cost of treatment, doctor's / surgeon's fee, room charges, diagnostic tests, medicines, etc. and also covers cost incurred 30 days prior and 60 days post the hospitalization.

If you are looking for coverage of pre-existing diseases, Rishtey is the only policy that covers them after 4 years of continuous coverage. And yes, they do conduct medical check up (its free) to confirm the health status.

Interestingly, Rishtey also offers some reimbursement of air fare to visit your parents in India in case they are hospitalized due to specified illnesses.

Where to buy?

Buying a health insurance policy in India typically involves going through an agent, which obviously doesn't help an NRI. As of now, only ICICI Lombard offers an online facility to gift a Health Insurance policy - 'Rishtey' - to parents in India through its website - http://www.icicilombard.com - with a special message from you. What's more, they also have toll free numbers from US / Canada and UK for buying over phone.

Peace of mind!

Gifting a health insurance policy to parents' certainly ensures that you can take care of them when they need you the most - even if you are not with them.

Gifts For Loyal Groomsmen

Loyal friends deserve only the most special gifts, more so when they're with you on the most important event of your life. Who else could play the roles of groomsmen except your closest buddies?

Note though that you and your buddies would have to go through a tedious process of wedding preparations and they, as your groomsmen, will be helping you as far as they could. You will be entrusting them with tasks so important that the success of your wedding would depend on how your buddies will carry out their duties. Of course, they will not refuse even if you ask them to do the decorations of your wedding reception. With all the hassles and obligations that your groomsmen will do for you, it is just proper that you thank and appreciate them and their efforts in making your wedding a success.

You could always say thank you to your groomsmen by giving them the best gifts that one can offer to their groomsmen. This gift giving has always been customary to thank your best buds in their efforts to make your wedding a memorable one. And since most groomsmen are your best friends, the gifts that you will give them can serve as tokens of your appreciation for the wonderful friendship that you both have shared through the years. Your groomsmen will surely appreciate the gifts that you will give them especially when they realize that the gifts given to them were afforded care and attention.

To make the gifts highly appreciated, you have to coordinate the gifts with your best bud's personality. Your groomsmen are definitely handful and some could be the shy-type, while others can be the other way around. Their personality is a huge factor in determining what gifts would best suit them. Avoid choosing generic gifts, one that would "fit all." Think of their individual hobbies and interests and purchase gifts according to each preference. If you're not sure about what their interests, ask their parents, girlfriends or wives. If you know them more, the easier it would be for you to get the perfect gift.

Barware are among the popular gifts for groomsmen. You can choose anything from beer steins, flasks, wine glasses, bottle openers, to other bar sets which are delightful gifts for buddies especially for those who love beers and wines. You can have these barware personalized by having your bud's name engraved or monogrammed in each piece. If they are sports buffs, have their favorite team's logo inscribed instead.

Another perfect option are cufflinks. These gifts can complement any formal outfit and can serve as perfect accents to your groomsmen tuxedos. They can even wear it during your big day. After the wedding, these cufflinks can still be used on any special occasion that your buddies will be invited thereafter.

You can also opt for money clips, pocket knives, business card cases, watches, custom pub signs, embroidered weekender bags, personalized grooming kits and the list is endless! If you want unique groomsmen gifts, you can always check online for suggestions. You will find a whole resource on the World Wide Web.

Mary Michaels invites you to take a look at the latest cufflinks for men offered at CanadaCufflinks.ca. Specialists in novelty cufflinks, men's unique gifts and accessories - you're certain to find something to your liking.

Consider Gift Baskets For Your Birthday Greetings

If you have a lot of friends and family, birthdays become a frequent affair and hunting for the perfect birthday gift can become a regular chore. Eventually, you run out of creative inspiration and it becomes more difficult to find that special gift. Some people then opt for gift vouchers or giving the usual flowers. However, that quickly gets boring. What never gets boring is giving a gift basket.

Flowers Have Limitations

The easiest, stress-free choice will probably always remain the option of sending fresh flowers to the birthday person and you can send the flowers to her workplace. However, how long do those flowers really last? Once they die, the gift's gone. And flowers give limited enjoyment, usually to the recipient only, as you can't very well share flowers around. But if you send a birthday gift basket, the recipient has the opportunity to share her spoils around the office or enjoy the gift in her own good time.

Please Everyone with a Gift Basket

Let's face it; when a gift basket is delivered to the workplace with all those yummy snacks in there, it draws everybody's attention. So the gift benefits the entire office as it lifts the atmosphere and sends a message of celebration, which in the end benefits the recipient and adds pleasure to her birthday. And they won't lack for choice, as usually gift boxes are full to overflowing with a wide range of items, so likely there will be something to suit everybody.

Give an Elegant Birthday Greeting

What makes gift baskets such a great gift is the way they're decorated and put together. Very often it's in a very artsy and appealing form, which catches the eye immediately. In this way, the gift basket acts as a magnet to people who may not even know the recipient and can extend birthday greetings. A gift basket shouts it's time to celebrate. It serves as an appetizer for the true celebration by setting the tone for the day at a level of elegance and thoughtfulness for the birthday recipient.

A Simpler Way to Send Birthday Love

Most people have a lot of obligations and responsibilities and is unlikely you'll be able to personally greet the person you care about face to face for her birthday. But of course, you want her to know you care. Sending a gift basket is the best gift to send in lieu of yourself, and it will save you on valuable time while allowing you to personalize the message. Best of all delivery, is always fast, ordering is simple, and once you have sent it, your time's your own to enjoy.

Give the Gift of a Great Experience This Valentines Day

There are many different types of gifts you can give on Valentines Day - flowers, jewelery, perfume and more. However, the one kind of gift that will leave a lasting impression is that of an experience. Flowers die, chocolates get eaten and jewelery stays in a box, but memories last forever.

The typical Valentines Day date is dinner at a restaurant. It's a tried and true kind of date, but to create a really special experience try something new.

A hot-air balloon ride or helicopter tour is a thrilling experience your partner won't forget. Take lots of pictures, laugh and point out the views together, and then relive the experience over drinks or coffee on the ground. This kind of short flight is a bit expensive, but Valentines Day is the perfect day to indulge in such a treat. Of course, this type of trip is a horrific experience for people with height phobias - so check that your partner isn't terrified of heights before you book a helicopter!

A river cruise is also a romantic excursion to indulge in for Valentines Day. The other participants of the cruise are likely to be couples, so the whole atmosphere will be very romantic. A long cruise might be difficult to schedule into your week, but a short cruise of a few hours can be the perfect date. You could also try to schedule the cruise in the evening, so that you can watch the sun set over the river.

Take a class together on Valentines Day. You could join a massage class, and learn some advanced techniques - this is a gift that will keep on giving throughout your relationship.

Another way to create a memorable experience is to take a trip together. A road trip might be enjoyable if you like driving, or you could plan a weekend getaway nearby. However, don't plan a camping trip without checking with your partner first since many people dislike camping.

A nice, lazy evening at home can also be an enjoyable memory. Don't depend on the TV to provide entertainment, though - rent some DVDs, order some takeout and spend some relaxing times together.

Whatever you do together on Valentines Day, take a few photos to record your day together. Later on, you can print out the photos and create a scrapbook of memories, or you can give your partner a photo-frame keychain with the photos playing in a slideshow.

Fathers Day Gifts - Stop the Power Tool Insanity

The minute you think about buying a fathers day gift for your dad, you get a vision of yourself wandering aimlessly through hardware stores and tie shops trying to find something that doesn't look like what you bought last year and something that dad will like. The very thought makes you put off buying a gift for dad until the very last minute and by then it's too late to think of coming up with anything new so it's either another tie or an electric saw.

Buying a gift for dad doesn't have to be that hard and just about anyone can find a unique gift but you have to be willing to look in different places, and by different places, I mean other stores instead of your routine ones. It makes sense that if you go to the same kinds of stores year after year you're going to find the same kinds of things every year. You need to look in new stores, preferably ones that are nowhere near where you normally shop when you need to buy a gift for your father.

If you don't have the kind of time on your hands that allows you to scout out new stores at the mall, go online and find a god site for gifts that has something special for fathers day. Don't go online and start looking for ties, look for fathers day gifts in general and you'll find something your dad will love. Fathers day gift baskets are a gift that you can look for because you aren't looking for any one kind of gift, or any fixed theme, there are a lot of gift basket themes and you can choose from any of them depending on what your dad likes.

Another really great fathers day gift is fruit bouquets; they're exquisite fresh fruit arrangements that look like flower bouquets and before you thing fruit and bouquets don't go with gifts for dad you need to actually look at one before you decide, dad will never be able to say no. The fruit is arranged in containers with different themes like basketball, race car themes (there's about 10 of these!) and golf ball themes. All of this makes it a good gift for dad.

Food gifts are generally a popular fathers day gift, they're also safe because men generally don't say no to food. Just remember to find a food gift that's unique.

Many companies sell unique fruit bouquets and delicious edib gifts; they roll out new lines of their products for special occasions like mothers day and fathers day. Try something different this year and buy a fruit bouquet for your dad. Fruit bouquets come with chocolate sauce.

Gifts That Car Lovers Will Love You For

Choosing the right gift for anybody is not easy. You have to balance between the cost, the meaning, and the preference of the recipient. In most cases, you will not know what the recipient likes. To get an awesome gift for car lovers, you need to do thorough research on what he/she likes. You should consider whether the recipient is male of female. Guys will appreciate practical gifts more and girls will appreciate pretty things more. You need to do research on such things as preferred colors, patterns, materials, and texture. You should consider whether he/she has the accessory already to avoid wasting your gift. To do this, take a ride on the car or ask indirect questions. You also need information on such things as whether he/she is technology savvy, where he/she lives to avoid exposing him/her to vandalism, and other relevant factors.

An unconventional gift for car lovers will love you for is driving lessons. However, this will depend on the experience and the skills of the driver. You should go for a level above what the recipient has, such as leaning how to drive a truck if he/she only drives small cars. A popular gift today is a radar detector that talks such as the Passport 8500 screens. Such detectors measure the frequency signature of radar and you will be able to slow down to the recommended speed. However, you should always drive carefully for your sake and for the sake of others. You should consider buying driving gloves. These go for around $125, but you should buy from an established company since most of them do not fit. Driving gloves are especially important if the recipient of the gift will be driving in extremely cold temperatures since their main use is adding grip on a freezing steering wheel. Established companies will make these gloves according to the hand size of the recipient, so you need to figure out a way to get this size.

Although this gift may not be romantic, tools are a very practical gift. This is especially so for girls who are less likely to buy them themselves. Other practical, but not necessarily romantic gifts, are snow tires for traction control which will keep him/her out of hospital and a spare wheel if the car does not have any. Another of the awesome gifts for car lovers is car magazines, especially the high end ones. This gift is only fit for those who are enthusiasts about cars such as racing fanatics. Other gifts that revolve around racing are watches and jackets. An example of such as watch is Monaco which goes for around $8,500. This is the watch that was worn by Steve McQueen in the 1970 motion picture, Le Mans. An example of a gift that would be perfect is a Ferrari jacket for a Ferrari formula 1 team supporter.

Many car lovers will appreciate a test drive with a classy car that they only dream about. You can rent such a car for them for some hours - this would make a good surprise. Car lovers will also appreciate pedal cars, especially kids.

If you have the money, the perfect gift for a car lover is an actual car that the recipient dreams about. This does not have to be expensive because you can organize a trade-in of the old car.

Mothers Day 2010 - Growing Trend of Gifting in India For This Occasion

A decade back, the concept of celebrating 'Mother's day' was almost alien to Indian culture. However, today the idea is fast catching up, thanks to globalization and India's increasing contact with the western world. The most remarkable aspect being: despite numerous festivals being celebrated in India, this foreign festival no doubt has caught the fancy of the Indian audience so much so that the practice to send mothers day gifts to India is fast picking up and Indians not just settled all across the world but even in different cities across India are making it a point to observe this occasion.

Other factors that helped this festival gain wider acceptance in India include: the vast presence of Indian Diaspora in the foreign lands, the internet revolution which aided in having a better understanding of the western culture, and not to mention the emotions attached to the festival. A mother based in India is no different from the mother based in US. The selfless love, emotions, sacrifice, sentiments that a mother showers while rearing and caring for her child remains the same all across the world, so naturally such an endearing concept had to find its way to India. Probably, Indians were only waiting to embrace a day to celebrate as mother's day.

An occasion to say a big thank-you

Akin to their western brethrens Indians too look upon Mother's Day as a day to thank mothers for all the love and care they have bestowed upon them all through the years. Some purists or pragmatists may differ in their opinions, saying that a special day need not be singled out to thank our mothers. On any given day, one can convey good wishes to mothers. Fair enough. Nonetheless, the fact of the matter remains that in today's fast-paced world, it becomes very difficult to take time-off from our daily schedules and spend even a few precious minutes with our mothers. As a result, a celebration like mother's day offers a great opportunity for all children to show their love and respect to their lovely moms.

With mother's day falling on May 9, 2010, one can go ahead and send mothers day flowers to India. The idea is to make her feel important, and to make her realize that she still remains the most valued person in your life. And with the advent of online gift stores overflowing with tempting mother's day gift ideas, arriving at the perfect gift for your mother would literally be a cake walk.

Corporates realizing the importance of the occasion launch women related products and restaurants try their best to attract people with best of the advertisements. Federal Gift Tax - Limits For 2009

There is a Federal Gift Tax but it is not clearly understood by most Americans. Some folks even think they can get a deduction for a gift to a friend or relative. So you want to give money to your kids or grandkids but wonder about the tax implications; how much is tax free? Or, if the kids are in bad financial shape and given money, is it a deduction? Hopefully, this article will answer your questions.

The Gift Tax is paid by the person giving the gift, not the one getting the gift. Even if your child or grandchild is destitute, there is no tax deduction for a gift to them. However, under current tax law, there is a $1 Million Lifetime Exemption to the Gift Tax. In addition to the Lifetime Exemption, you can give $13,000 each year to as many people as you want without incurring any Gift Tax. This figure is indexed for inflation and goes up every year. A husband and wife may each give gifts so in that event, $26,000 may be given by a married couple.  Cash gifts are not the only kind that are subject to the Gift Tax.  If real estate, fine art or precious jewelry is given, they also fall under the same dollar limits as cash gifts.

One may pay the medical bills or educational costs of another person and those payments are not treated as being part of the Annual Exclusion or Lifetime Exemption. If you reimbursed someone for the tuition they paid or that was paid with a student loan, that amount will be subject to the $13,000 limitation. If you reimburse someone for medical bills they paid, it also will be subject to the limit. It is very important that the giver pay the bills directly to the doctor, hospital or school and not to the individual who owes the bill. In this scenario a person could give their grandchild $13,000 directly tax free and pay the school tuition directly with no Gift Tax implications on either amount.

If gifts to any one person exceed the Annual Exclusion amount, then one must file a U.S. Gift Tax return, Form 709.  As gifts are made each year above the exclusion, the totals would count against the $1 Million Lifetime Exemption.  As long as the gifts don't exceed $1 Million total, no tax is due.  Once gifts made above the exclusion each year total over the exemption, the Gift Tax must be paid at very steep rates of between 37%-45%.  Please see a CPA, EA, or Accredited Tax Advisor for help in the tax planning of gifts

Festivities on Bhai Dooj and Gift Ideas

The festival which predates Rakshabandhan and is more widely celebrated in Northern India is Bhai Dooj. It brings together brothers and sisters who are separated by distances and social obligations. The 'tilak' which the sister applies on her brother's forehead is considered very auspicious and is the main significance of the festival apart from Bhai Dooj gifts and sweets.

The festival is celebrated in the month of October - November, two days after Diwali. Though the date is not fixed it falls on the new moon night and is accurately calculated by pandits. This festival augments the brother sister bond and is highly revered by Hindus.

There are several stories supporting the festival. It is believed that Yamraj the god of death visited his sister Yamuna on this day. Yamuna applied the vermillion tilak on his forehead and put a garland around him, wishing him well. They exchanged gifts and sweets. Yamraj was so pleased that he announced that anyone who gets a vermillion tilak on this auspicious day will never be led through hell's doors. Therefore Bhai Dooj is also known as Yama Dwitiya.

Another legend emphasizes that after vanquishing the demon Narakasura Lord Krishna went to his sister Subhadra's house. She welcomed him with aarti (lit diya), flowers and sweets. She then applied the tilak on his forehead. Since then it is believed that on the day of Bhai Dooj the brother goes to the sister's house and the 'vermillion tilak' is a symbol of love and prayers from a sister to her brother.

The festival is celebrated with much gusto by all people who observe Diwali. Puja is performed at the same place where deities were bedecked for Diwali. Sisters apply tilak on the brother's forehead, perform the aarti and offer sweets. The aarti is accompanied by a beautifully decorated thali which contains roli and rice in specific Katoris. Thalis are festooned with colored grains, pepper, buds, petals, leaves, beads and sequins. Bhai Dooj sweets are also an important part of the thali.

The festival is known as Bhai Phota, Bhatri Ditya, Bhai Tika, Bhathru Dwithiya and Yama Dwithiya. The celebrations mark a family get together and are occasions of jubilation. In some parts of the country there are special cultural events organized to mark the celebration.

Mithai are also unique to the festival and sweets and other gifts are exchanged as a part of the revelry. Sending Bhai Dooj sweets to India is now made easy with numerous online marts that efficiently cater to the needs of customers. Hight Quality Seven years in Tibet part 1/15

alturl.com Click on the link bellow to Watch Seven years in Tibet Full Movie Online Free The introduction shows the young Dalai Lama receiving gifts from Tibetan monks. One gift he receives, an ornate music box, has special meaning to him, as he is still a young child. The progress of Heinrich Harrer through India and Tibet on his trek across the high plateau to Lhasa is interwoven with the story of the young Dalai Lama growing into an 8 year old boy who becomes the spiritual leader of Tibet, with a thirst for western knowledge and later into an adolescent. The Dalai Lama is portrayed by three different actors as he grows up. Harrer (Pitt) and his pregnant wife Ingrid (Ingeborga Dapkunaite) are briefly shown being driven to the train station in Graz, for Harrer's departure on an expedition to Nanga Parbat. It becomes evident that Ingrid resents his departure. At the station Harrer barges through the crowds, dragging his wife by the hand, and shows his resentment of Peter Aufschnaiter's selection as leader of the expedition. Harrer at the train station in 1939 appears hostile to the Nazi Party, taking their flag with reluctance. The real-life Heinrich Harrer admitted he had Nazi sympathies at the time which he later regretted. Harrer's arrogance and self-sufficiency become apparent as he sits by himself on the train journey to India. The expedition begins climbing the mountain Harrer, Aufschnaiter, and the expedition group begin climbing Nanga Parbat. Harrer falls ...

The Festival of Holi

Holi, Phagwa or Basant Utsav is an annual festival that welcomes spring. It is celebrated on the day after the full moon in the Hindu month of Phalguna (end February or early March). Holi is particularly celebrated in North India. The association of Holi with religion is absent now since there are no longer any customs that may remind us of its religious roots.

How do People Spend This Holi-Day?
Holi is celebrated in all states and territories except Karnataka, Kerala, Nagaland, Puduchery, Tamil Nadu and Tripura. Vasant Panchami in Orissa, Tripura, West Bengal. The day begins with people attending Holi parties where everyone gathers to celebrate Holi with dance music and colours. There is a ritual of drinking bhang ki thandai and eating mithais and sweets (that may also be filled with bhang, an intoxicating homemade drug). Rest of the day is spent visiting family and friends and exchanging Holi gifts in India.

Holi Bonfires
Initially Holi was a celebration of fertility and new beginnings that lasted for many days or weeks. But, the main festivities last two days. On the first day of the celebration, which is known as Chhoti Holi, Holika Dahan takes place. This tradition involves burning huge bonfires, dancing, singing and general merry making. The idea behind Holika Dahan is the victory of good over evil.

Colours of Holi
The best part of any Holi celebration is the play with colours. People throw Holi gulal and Abeer on friends and dear ones on Badi Holi or Dhulendi. It is the time of forgetting all enmity and meeting each other with lots of love. Also, people sing and dance on the beats of dholak. All these traditions add more joy to the festivities on Holi.

Legend Behind Holi Colours
As with Holika Dahan, the story behind Holi colours is connected to another of Lord Vishnu's avatars, Krishna. Legend has it that Lord Krishna was not too happy with the fact that whereas Radha was fair complexioned, he himself was very dark. Krishna questioned his mother about this injustice. To make her son happy, Yashoda suggested that Krishna apply colour on Radha's face and change her complexion. Krishna was also understood to have played with milkmaids (gopis) by throwing colour and water on them. It was thus that the game of applying colours gained popularity and became a part of Holi traditions. Even now, the application of colours is also an expression of love.

Playing with Colours on Holi
All kinds of distinctions are forgotten during Holi. The tradition of playing with colours on Holi is extremely popular as a general leveller among men and women (and other differences) in the society. There are Holi games that generate a feeling of goodwill and equality. Children also especially wait for this festival to show their true mischievous colours. They eagerly wait for someone with dry colours and water colours filled in a water jet popularly called a pichkari. 'Bura na mano Holi hai' is the underlining theme of this fun filled festival.

Christmas Gifts For Gardeners - Three Christmas Gifts For Gardeners They're Sure to Love

Once again 'tis the season for gift giving and, chances are, you've got someone on your list who is a gardener. So, what do you get a person with a green thumb? Thankfully, there are many fun and useful Christmas gifts for gardeners in just about every price range. Here are a few gift ideas that are sure to get the green-thumbs up from those gardeners on your Christmas list.

Indoor Herb Gardens

These hydroponic systems make the perfect gift for gardeners or foodies. The system grows fresh herbs, right on your kitchen counter, all year round, using just water and nutrients. In fact, these systems are so advanced they are equipped with a computerized monitor that actually tells you when your herbs need nutrients and water. Talk about fool-proof gardening. These systems grow 100% natural and organic herbs, giving the gift of good taste all year round.

Countertop Composters

Any gardener will tell you that adding compost to your garden makes for nutrient-rich soil and, as a result, some seriously healthy vegetables and flowers. The only drawback to composting is it can sometimes be an inconvenient and smelly practice. No one wants to run out to the compost bin in the backyard every time you have some veggie scraps to add to the pile and keeping those scraps in the kitchen can get a little fragrant.

Cue the countertop composter. This handy little compost keeper has a charcoal lid to keep down those unpleasant odors and is attractive enough that you won't mind keeping it right on your kitchen counter-which saves you many trips to the composter. If you have a gardener or environmentally conscience person on your gift list this gift will score huge points.

Garden Tool Sets

Give the gift of organization with one of the many gardening tool gift sets on the market. There's nothing worse than having your new plants all lined up, ready to plant, and spending half an hour rooting around in the shed for your gardening tools. You could save someone a lot of frustration with a handy gardening tool storage bag, which keeps all their tools in one easy-to-tote storage bag. Grab the bag, plant your flowers, and store the tools in the bag for next time. Sure sounds better than playing find-the-shovel, doesn't it?

If you've got a gardener on your Christmas list, consider getting them one of these handy Christmas gifts for gardeners. They'll enjoy using that handy gardening gadget and, hey, you may get some free veggies as a thank you.

St. Joseph's School in Kerala, India

Check the photos: www.flickr.com Saint Joseph's Elementary School serves over 300 students ages 6 to 12 in a poor fishing village near Chowara in the state of Kerala, South India. This February, I was invited to visit the school by our friend Azul Meeser, during a ten-day retreat with my yoga group at the nearby Somatheeram Ayurvedic Center. I shot this short video of that eye-opening experience, as well as the photo slideshow (see above link). Both show in vivid detail the real conditions in which many children are taught in developing countries around the world. I was impressed by the children's natural curiosity and vivacity, as well as the teacher's commitment to bringing a quality education in this disadvantaged community. But it was also clear that this 'private aided' school needed more help from outside sources, since it receives only minimal support from the government. Many of the children need shoes, uniforms -- even food bowls (some kids come to school on an empty stomach and need to be fed so they can focus on their studies). They also need a vehicle to drive some of the students who live several kilometers away from school. So we reached out to other guests of Somatheeram to help us pay for uniforms and food bowls for 325 students. In less than 24 hours, two dozen people joined forces with us to raise over a thousand US dollars in cash donations. They included most of the students in Erika Trice's yoga class, as well as other generous world citizens from ...

How To Find Cool Wedding Gifts that Won't Break the Bank

Taking the time to pick out a special gift or creatively put something together for them will be more memorable than kitchen supplies, towels and other gifts that are commonly given at weddings. A wedding gift does not have to be expensive to be well received and appreciated by the new bride and groom. By putting in a bit of thought you can find wonderful gifts without emptying your wallet.

Creative Gifts

There are several different ideas for making inexpensive wedding gifts. The happy couple will feel blessed that you took the time to put together something special. Some ideas are;

A creative yet useful gift is to fill a mixing bowl with a variety of kitchen utensils. Use a basket containing the elements of a romantic dinner. Include items such as pasta, sauce, a bottle of wine and two wine glasses. You could also include a sweet desert, like biscotti or chocolate. Picture frames are always a safe bet, there is bound to be pictures from the wedding or other things to put in them. Along the lines of photographs, if you are close friends or relative to one of them, you could gather all pictures you have of them and start a photo album or scrapbook. Check at discount stores and craft stores for the supplies above.

Other Gift Ideas

Some other ideas for inexpensive wedding gifts are;

Check stores to find out if the couple has a gift registry, then choose something you can afford off that list. You can also look at those lists to get an idea what sort of gift the couple might like. Candles are another gift which many think of when they hear wedding bells. You can get as many or few as you want. To dress them up a bit, put variety in a basket and add some bubble bath, a bottle of wine, and 2 wine glasses.

Wedding gifts do not have to be expensive for the couple to like them. Using your creativity and a dash or romance, you can put together a gift that they will appreciate. Wedding gifts are meant to be a symbol of your good wishes to the new couple. Feel free to put your own personal touches into your wedding present. The couple will most like appreciate your efforts and thank you for all the hard work you put into their present. Trust me I was just married a month ago and it really is the thought that counts.

The People of Pahalgam, Kashmir

This video is a collection of photos from my second visit to Pahalgam in 2005. It's one of my favorite places; the people are beautiful and the landscape is gorgeous. The Kashmiris are dying for their freedom (azad), yet a resolution seems a long way off. Neither India nor Pakistan want to relinquish their stronghold on a state that wants to be independent from both countries decades old politics, which many feel are related to water rights. Fighting in the region has worsened since the Mumbai attacks. I hope to return to Pahalgam one day and gift these amazing people with their portraits!

Journey of Raksha Bandhan From History to Recent Times

All the festivals celebrated in India have got their roots in history and relate to some historical events or people. Before we get ourselves busy in preparing for Raksha Bandhan 2010 it is time we take a look into the history behind its origin and what are the traditions attached to it. Three different references of Raksha Bandhan are found in history and in all of them it is observed that rakhi has helped strengthen the bond of love between a brother and sister.

Three historic references related to Raksha Bandhan are as below:

- The first incident dates back to 300 BC when King Alexander attacked India and was defeated by king Peru in the first attack. Before the second war took place between the two, wife of King Alexander sent rakhi to King Peru who accepted it and promised to look after her happiness. As expected in the second war king Peru kept to his promise.

- Another historical incident related to Raksha Bandhan took place in 15th century when Rani Karnawatee of Chittor sent rakhi to Mughal emperor Humayun after she was widowed by invader, sultan of Gujarat. Here again Humayun accepted the rakhi and rushed to Chittor to protect his sister from the invaders.

- The latest historical event related to Raksha Bandhan took place in 1905 when British Empire decided to divide Bengal in small parts depending on the caste of the people. In protest Kaviguru Rabindra Nath Tagore turned to Rakshabandhan to unite Hindus and Muslims in Bengal.

Raksha Bandhan is a big festival for India and is celebrated with great faith and devotion. It is known by different names like Avani Avittam / Upakramam, Kajari Purnima, Narial Purnima, Pavitropana etc in different states of India, celebrations also vary as per the names. Sisters plan for the festival by buying special rakhis and preparing pooja thalis. Brothers on the other hand plan for the festival by buying special gifts for their sisters. On the big day sister visits brother's house and ties rakhi on his wrist, in return brother gives her a gift and promises to be by her side in all phases of life.

In recent times though the importance of the festival remains unchanged there is one thing that has changed and that is the way it is celebrated. Brothers and sisters are scattered in different parts of the world and this sometimes makes it impossible for them to celebrate the festival together. Internet turns out to be a big boon for such brothers and sisters living apart and still wish to celebrate the festival. Sisters use various sites to send rakhis to their brothers and brothers use internet to send special rakhi gifts to their sisters. This ensures that they celebrate the festival thinking of each other though they are miles apart.

This Raksha Bandhan make sure that you make the festival special by sending your brothers special rakhis through internet. Brothers in return can send online rakhi gifts to their sisters.
Happy Raksha Bandhan 2010!
