Sweeten Your Love With Valentine Cakes

The affair began in ancient Rome when the basic of bread, butter, egg and honey was called nothing but a baked sweet dish. Since then this baked bread has evolved so much that it has become an inevitable part of all major celebrations. The creamy layers around the soft, baked bread simply melt in the mouth leaving us wanting for more. It would be improbable to know that such an adorable delicacy is left out from Valentine celebrations. Chocolate, Black Forest, Pineapple, or Strawberry; the perfect icing on the cake would charm your beloved like never before.

Cakes are one of the most sought after Valentine's Day gifts online. It's obvious that you would want to choose an online gifting store for they are comfortable and easily accessible. Another reason is that through online shopping for cakes, you can reach your loved ones living anywhere in India and the USA. And guess what? The shipping facility is free too! So we suggest you share the taste of love this Valentine's day through an online bakery. You'll have a minimum of three categories to choose from. Let's take a closer look.

There's a great display of Regular Valentine Cakes on online bakeries. Chocolate Mousse, Black Forest, Chocolate Fudge Chocolate Truffle are few of the most preferred cakes for Valentine's Day. Basically, it is the flavour of chocolate that's the most appealing. Otherwise, these cakes contain more or less the same ingredients. They are, primarily, baked with eggs. The sponge cakes are drenched in Kirsch, sprinkled with sweet dark chocolate, covered in a light valentine chocolate and a smooth chocolate glaze, ornamented by beautiful Belgian chocolate curls, iced with moist chocolate truffle, layered with chocolate pudding, delicately laid overall by the gold coin chocolates and some more such methods to make your mouth water and the day extra special.

Egg less Valentine's Day Cakes too taste equally delicious including the fact that they are baked in baking salts and do not contain eggs. An egg less chocolate walnut cake is just as delicious as any other chocolate cake. This sponge cake has the goodness of chocolate and walnuts, garnished with crunchy walnuts to give it a tempting look.

Now there's something that comes to your mind instantly when you think of love and Valentine's Day simultaneously. The heart! You would love it that the heart-warming Valentine cake sent to your beloved is the shape of your heart, wouldn't you? You can order for that special heart-shaped cake from an online bakery. A heart-shaped chocolate cake with cards and flowers is a romantic combo to spend a quiet evening with your love. It would give an exact expression that you were looking for.

Since 2000 Talash.com is an online gifts store having huge collection of Valentine's Day Gifts. You can send Valentine Gifts like flowers, chocolates, gift vouchers, and Valentine Cakes to India. Buy them at affordable rates with Free Shipping.

Blessing of Jesus in Christmas

Christian religion celebrates Christmas festival with friends and relatives by sharing gifts and sweets. Christmas festival is spread whole over world and according to God's desire, Jesus Christ was founder of Christian religion and he took incarnation as a man on earth. According to Christmas belief by people, God sends an angle on earth to tell unknown girl Mary that she would give birth to a sun even though she was virgin and that name was to be Jesus and Mary followed him. Christmas one of two grand festival of the Christian church, one it celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ and another Easter marks his death and resurrection.

Christmas festival is celebrated by people with full of joy and happiness. And Christian people remember Jesus Christ on this day and celebrate this day in his respect. All of this easily lends itself to the children's nativity plays staged by the many churches and schools in every December. Costumes, stages sets are made, scripts are written and learned and children dress up in dressing gowns and tells the story of Christmas how he born and how he survived and how he murdered in his cradle. On Christmas, Christians sing carols-joyful songs which were truly sung as people danced. People hear good news of great joy which is the heart of Christmas- Jesus is no less than God, come to live the life of human being on earth. Jesus is 'God with us'. Christmas shows an angle flying over Jesus in the manger and casting on him the shadow of a cross.

There is holiday on this day in India but there is no holiday on sixth of January. The main attraction of Christmas is pasture land and star. Every Christian decorates whole house and church on Christmas because this is the major festival of Christians. Youngsters make pasture land on Christmas and also prepare the statue of Marium mother. This pasture land where the light of God brings out till it takes care. People shared gifts to each other like cakes, chocolates, bells, Christmas tree, sweets, dry fruits, Christmas candles and many more unique gifts with attractive packing.

Charm Bracelets As Gifts

Charms are becoming increasingly popular items to give as gifts for a wide variety of holidays and personal occasions. Whether for birthdays, weddings, Mother's Day, Valentine's Day, Christmas, graduation, anniversary, or any other special occasion, there are endless kinds of charm bracelets that can be used as gifts.

Birthdays are a wonderful occasion to give the gift of jewelry adorned with the age of the recipient. In addition, there are wonderful selections of amulets bearing the symbols of the zodiac. These images include the ram for birthdays falling between the dates of March 20th and April 20th, the bull for April 20th through May 21st, twins for May 21st through June 21st, the crab for June 21st through July 22nd, the lion for July 22nd through August 23rd, the virgin for August 23rd through September 23rd, the scale for September 23rd through October 23rd, the scorpion for October 23rd through November 22nd, the archer for November 22nd through December 22nd, the sea-goat for December 22nd through January 20th, the water bearer for January 20th through February 18th, and the fish for February 18th through March 20th.

Particular birthstones used in charm bracelets may also be used as a unique birthday gift. The modern birthstones used are garnet for January, amethyst for February, jade or aquamarine for March, diamond for April, emerald for May, pearl for June, ruby for July, sardonyx for August, sapphire for September, opal for October, topaz for November, and turquoise for December. If the gift bearer is interested in giving a gift which includes a birthstone, they might also look into other practices of determining birthstones including mystical birthstones which originated in Tibet, or ayurvedic birthstones originating in India.

Mother's Day and Valentine's Day-themed charm bracelets often include the universal symbol of love, the heart. Gold or silver beads engraved with flowers are also popular. Of course, charm bracelets for such occasions can be highly personalized by adding beads made of the recipients favorite gem or based on their hobbies or interests, for example.

Graduation jewelry adorned with amulets often include symbols of luck and good fortune. Others are embellished with precious metals carved into graduation caps, books, and other unique artwork associated with erudite achievements.

Adults and children alike enjoy the versatility and joy that comes with uniquely made charm bracelets. The ideas for gifts of this nature are endless. No matter what one's personal interests are, there will likely be several charms to choose from in each category.

Valentines Day Gifts For Your Wife

February 14th or Saint Valentines day, the day that makes us feel the excitement and nostalgia of love at the same time. Valentines day is an occasion that encourages us to celebrate the present day relationships that matter the most. It is also the day that signifies the nostalgia of the past memories and asks us to relive the moments that made our lives count. It is that time of the year once again, when we have the chance to make 'the love of our life', our wives feel loved and cherished. Here are some ideas on valentine's day gifts for your wife.

Clothes: It is a well known fact that women love clothes. Their styles may differ from being eccentric to sophisticated to under stated. But, whatever their choice of dressing up, they do love splurging on a new set of clothes every now and then. This valentines day gift your wife something that will make her day and make the occasion memorable for both of you.

Jewellery: If we are talking about your wife, she would definitely have either of the feelings commonly associated with jewellery, desire or passion. Though your decision on what to buy her purely depends on your understanding about her taste in ornaments. But, still one should be very particular in buying jewellery as a valentines day gift for women as they are known for their ability to judge a gifts' emotional and material value at one glance.

Travel: This Valentine's day give your wife something she will remember for a long time to come, a trip to a place she loves. Planning a weekend or a good 4-5 days together is a great valentines day gift idea. With our ever busy and complicated lives giving us lesser time for our family, time spent with our loved ones becomes very rare and thus more precious. So, a Valentines Day is a perfect reason to do just that.

Personalised Gifts: Gifts that have the added personal touch always give the impression of being thoughtful and expressive. Since, Valentine's Day is a time to celebrate the deepest and the most heartfelt of all human emotions, love. Thus, personalised gifts are an excellent gifting idea on this occasion. This includes flowers, engraved gifts, greeting cards, candles and decorations, to name a few.

The correct gifting ideas help in conveying the message that sometimes we are not able to say on our own. One should be careful in choosing gifts that leave a lasting impression and are able to create memories of a lifetime for you and your loved ones.

Although it is a message that is most recently linked to President-Elect Barack Obama, the idea of a community championing change is as old as ancient India. On January 19 Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the eve of Obamas presidential inauguration these worlds come together as the spiritual meets the political. Prominent Kirtan artists, including Grammy-award nominee Jai Uttal, Dave Stringer, Daphne Tse, and local performers Gaura Vani & As Kindred Spirits, will lead the evening of chanting which is hosted by renowned yoga teacher Shiva Rea. Diwali Celebrations in India

Diwali or the festival of lights, generally falls in the month of Ashwin according to the Hindu calendar, in other words in the month of October/November as per Gregorian calendar. The festivities of Deepavali last for five consecutive days i.e. two days before the Diwali festival that is known as Dhanteras & Narak Chaturdashi and Govardhan Puja & Bhai Duj respectively. Read on to know more about the different aspects of Diwali celebrations in India.

The Five Days Celebrations of Diwali Festival

The First Day: Dhanteras

The celebrations of Diwali festival start with Dhanteras. Dhanteras is also called Dhantrayodashi and falls on the 13th lunar day of Krishna Paksh, in the month of Kartik. As per the mythological legend, during the churning of the milk-ocean (Kshir Sagar) by gods and demons, God Dhanvantari appeared out on this day. Therefore the Dhanteras festival is regarded as an auspicious occasion for the purchase of utensils, gold and silver. On this day Hindu devotees light up a diya or lamp near a sacred tree in the home's courtyard. Along with the lamp sweet offering are also made to Yamaraj-the Lord of Death.

The Second Day: Chhoti Diwali or Narak Chaturdashi

The next day after Dhanteras, Narak Chaturdashi or Chhoti Diwali is celebrated. This occasion falls on the 14th day and marks the victory of good over evil as according the legend, on this day Lord Krishna killed the demon Narakasura for the well-being of mankind. On this day Hindus get up early in the morning and after massaging their body with fragrant oil take bath. Small earthen lamps and colorful rangolis are made the mark the celebrations. In the evening special prayers and sweets offerings are made to Goddess Laxmi and to the ancestors.

The Third Day: Laxmi Puja on Diwali

The third day of Diwali festival is the most important day that is observed with the Laxmi Puja ceremony in the evening. Hindus offer special prayers, chants hymns and mantras with sweets offerings to the Goddess Laxmi (goddess of wealth) and Lord Ganesha (god of auspicious beginnings). Clay diyas, candles, lamps and fire work are lit to mark the jubilations and seek blessings of well being and good fortune.

The Fourth Day: Govardhan Puja

The fourth day of Diwali festivities is called Govardhan Puja or Annakut and it is celebrated to mark the victory of Lord Krishna over Lord Indra. As per the legend it is believed that Lord Krishna convinced the people to not to worship Lord Indra and to concentrate only on their sole Karma i.e. farming and cattle protection. Lord Krishna taught them to worship nature and stop worshiping Indra. With this Lord Indra got angered and flooded the whole village and protect the villagers and their cattles, Lord Krishna lifted mount Govardhan. Thus people on this day light up lamps and fire crackers to mark the jubilation. The same occasion is celebrated as Padva or BaliPratipada in the Indian state of Maharasthra. In Gujarat Govardhan Puja as the beginning of the New Year.

The Fifth Day: Bhai Duj

After Govardhan Puja and two days of Diwali comes Bhai Duj that is known as Bhai Bij in Gujarat and Bhai Phota in Bengal. On this special day brothers and sisters meet each other for the expression of affection and care. On this occasion the sister applies tilak with vermilion or sandal on her brother's forehead and performs an aarti of him, wishing him a long and successful life. In return, the brother blesses his sister and offers her sweets and gifts. With Bhai Duj celebrations the five days long Diwali festivities come to an end.

Creating Sweets As Gifts

Do you find it ridiculous to spend hundreds of dollars each holiday season buying gifts for everyone you know? When you are splurging on your family, friends, and even neighbors, you can find yourself in debt quickly. Instead of buying department store items this holiday season, considering making sweets as gifts. Don't worry; you don't have to be a master baker to get through this task. It can actually be quite fun!

The first thing you should do is figure out what you want to make. Since some of your neighbors might have peanut or nut allergies, you should stick with something that doesn't contain nuts of any kind. Something like fudge or holiday cookies are great to start with. If you want to keep it simple, only choose one or two different sweets to create.

Next, find great packages to house your sweets. Holiday tins are perfect. Get one tin per family. Then start baking your treats and place them decoratively in your tins. Remember that you will need to deliver them soon after baking. If you wait too long, they will not be edible at all. So, this is something you might want to do the week of the holiday and take them around personally to hand them out.

When you create sweets as gifts you will find that you are having a great time and spending less money than you usually do. It is a great feeling to get a gift that someone has spent time on as well, so your friends and family will love it!

Check out some sample Indian sweets [http://www.shaadibliss.com/india/indian-recipes/index.html] that are easy and low fat.

Family Planning in India

Pundits of social sciences have predicted that the population of the world doubles before the turn of the century and reaches 500 million mark. Even at half the strength, three fourths of the world's population lead a life of poverty and ignorance. For them, life is a continuous struggle for survival, and existence is but a burden. New morn does not begin with a new hope, nor the day ends with sweet recollections. The plight of animals is much better; when once their bellies are full they have no other care on earth, no worry about clothing or shelter; no worry about tomorrow. But these hapless people are born in worry and die in worry.

They do not realize that a major reason for their pitiable state is their big families. Out of ignorance they believe that children are the gifts of gods and that they have no right to do anything but accept these divine gifts. They do not realize that they have a duty too- duty to look after and bring them up, give them good education and make them useful citizens. Blissfully they forget this. To a certain extent, their religious beliefs are to blame for such an ignorant outlook.

In such conditions, therefore, the responsibility of the government increases. On one hand it must try to increase the means of production and on the other, educate the ignorant masses about the need to limit their families. Natural sources like land and water cannot cross a certain limit and respond to your needs but population can swell beyond limits; may double every forty or fifty years, in spite of calamities like floods, famines, wars and diseases. Therefore the need to arrest the growth of population.

In western countries where the people are more materialistic, the living standards are high and under no circumstances, they are prepared to make sacrifices and settle down for anything less. They willingly implement the family planning, programs, and enjoy life, relishing every bit of it. They are the happy travelers who have realized the secret of a pleasant journey: 'less luggage and more comfort'.

They have also realized that, man being a social being cannot experience happiness or sorrow, all by himself, in utter privacy and seclusion. He needs others to share with him in his joys and sorrows. In other words, the joys and sorrows of other people are yours too. It means you have willingly accepted to share the burden of the society. You now realize that, though you have a right to beget as many children as you please, you have no right to deny your duty to bring them up. You cannot send them to Fagin school and burden the society with thieves and pickpockets.

But this is not enough because the people are ignorant. They do not realize the intensity of the problem and part with their age old habits. With the invention of antibiotics and other high power drugs, longevity has increased, death rate decreased to a considerable extent and the population is increasing, naturally. The only course then left open is to enforce it with vigor and strength. Long ago, the government did not hesitate to introduce 'Sarada Act' in order to prevent child marriages. Now is the time to introduce such preventive legislature to enforce the new code strictly and arrest the population growth. Otherwise, if the population goes on increasing, and when it touches the 10 Billion mark, it is difficult to guess how much burden it will cast on the country and the people. Even after so many years of freedom we have not solved at least one problem completely - have not for example, provided with drinking water every village. Wherever you go nothing but dust and dirt rising like thin maintained in such a bad manner, electricity still eluding, village after village plunges in utter darkness and big cities like Price of essential commodities soaring up, floods and famines leaving behind horrible tracks of death and disaster - majority of people simply existing, not much to eat, not enough to cover their bodies with and without roof to protect them from sun and rain, hartals, strike, mass murders, terrorism, hijacking, unemployment, and unrest threatening every part of the country - if this is the picture now with 600 million, what shape would it take with 1000 millions? Will there be enough to provide them with at least a meal a day? How many of them can have roofs over their heads? How many schools to educate them? How many hospitals to treat them? UNO may extend its helping hand; countries like America may offer PL 480 loans and outright gifts of food and medicines, the task will still remain incomplete; with hopes belied and dreams unrealized, the country will remain backward forever, and people will languish in utter poverty and ignorance.

But there are people who believe that the greatest asset that India has, is its 'man - power. Here, in less than a thousandth part of the inhabited world is concentrated one fifth of its population - more than half of them, are able bodied, patient, hard working, but no work to do and therefore ready to do anything in order to make an honest living. Inspire them, and, nothing will be too difficult to achieve, no hurdle will be too high to surmount. As our revered UGC chairman has remarked, in one year illiteracy can be completely driven out of our land. Only thing we need to do is to declare a long holiday for all the educational institutions and run education camps in every village. If we have vision and leadership, we can even construct not dykes but walls to keep the sea at bay. Sky will only be the limit then. But now the family planning shall go on.

Gift Shopping Online - Making The Best Of It

Gift shopping online has never been easier and better. The first part of this article highlights the advantages of shopping online and the second part discusses some tips on how to make the best out of your online search.

Why Shop Online?

1) Shopping online saves time, expensive gas and money. Some companies do not charge sales tax for out of state sales, but there may be use tax implication.

2) The best part of online shopping is that you don't have to leave the comfort of your own home. No more roaming around crowded stores, malls or wait in long checkout queue.

3) It may be hard to resist impulse buy if you are wandering around in the stores. With online shopping the urge is reduced because your search or purchase is usually more focused.

4) You can shop online anytime and anywhere as long as you have access to the internet.

5) One advantage of shopping online is if you are buying a gift for someone abroad. You can buy online from a local vendor and have the gift shipped to the recipient without you going through the trouble of sending it yourself.

6) Many online stores offer very quick dispatch or delivery. Many offer next day delivery. Therefore, last minute shoppers can shop with ease.

Starting Your Search - Making The Best Out of Your Online Gift Shopping

1) You may already have a store in mind but if you are starting your search, there are various ways where a search may begin. Firstly, if you know what gift you would like to buy, a search by "product" can be done. Try to be as specific or narrow your search to produce the best results. For example if you are searching for a Kodak 8" digital frame, type in the full description (including model if you know it) instead of just digital frames. If you are looking for a gift to be delivered in the UK, include the words "for UK delivery" in your search. This will narrow your results tremendously. Also, look at the domain or url of the listed websites. Those that end in .com may be US located websites and they may not deliver to the UK. It is best to pick sites that end in .co.uk to speed up your search.

You may also search by "occasion" such as "Mother's Day" or by "theme" such as "funny birthday presents for boyfriend"

2) Make use of online shopping tools offered by these shopping sites to enhance your gift search. Popular tools include Gift Wizard which will help you find products from some given criteria's (age, interests etc..); Price Comparisons are useful; Wish List and Events Reminder are also value added tools; Many customers find Product Reviews and Testimonials helpful.

3) Look for companies with favorable Returns Policy and quick dispatch or delivery. 30 days back guaranteed and shipping within 24 hours are usually expected and reasonable conditions for many online stores.

4) Also important is the ability to contact the store readily. A store that offers a telephone contact number will boost customer confidence.

Happy Online Shopping!

Shobhaa De is coming up with books at such a rapid pace, it's difficult to keep track. Here we are just trying to discuss her thoughts, as they have evolved with the evolving India. Shobhaa De sees the change taking place in the country as tumultuous but good for the country which include everything, good, bad and ugly. She views herself as a global Indian who has kept pace with the changes in the country.

Shobhaa De Refuses To Fade Away

She says, the women have a natural ability to adjust to any new situation, which probably explains her own success at being what she is today. She is a natural at challenging the conventional so she may have the freedom to do what she wants to. She refuses to be a fading granny figure, and says it is possible to live life after sixty as well.

A Journey with India

She has always been known for writing the way she does (provocative), though she has largely remained around Bollywood most of the time. She has changed tack now and has started to write about India and how to live life after sixty (different books). She believes her life journey has gone along with India (both are sixty now), and that she has had a lovely journey so far. She wants the youth of the country to remain invested in the country, because that's where the future is, she says. She wants to discourage the earlier Go West instinct ingrained into us by our own elders.

Believe in India

Shobhaa De says she never stopped believing in India because of her father and the way he brought her up. She never tried to write for the audience in Europe and USA, though the decision had nothing to do with any jingoistic reason. There was a time when Indians were apologetic about being Indian, now the body language of the younger generation has undergone a sea change. They believe they are right up there with the best.

Why Do We Run After The Oscars?

Shobhaa De believes the fundamentals of the country are extremely strong right now, and only a natural disaster or getting nuked may change the picture. At the age of sixty, she believes, India is a very young country.  She is strongly against the tendency of all of us to claim an Indian connection with a successful person (especially if he has done well in West). We are still running helter-skelter after the Booker prize, Oscars or anything that is remotely associated with it. It doesn't matter if big names prefer to say they are American (Sunita Williams for example), we still want to claim them.

Wedding ceremonies are the stuff fairy tales are made of. Marriages are made in heaven, it is said. Keeping this age-old adage in mind, a heavenly atmosphere is created at the wedding venue. Aromatic smells fill the air. Guests decked in their Sunday best walk the red carpet with wedding gifts in tow. Giving gifts on the wedding day is part of the ceremony. A gift symbolizes the good will guests have for the newly married. Through these gifts, guests wish the couple a long and happy married life. Naturally, when wedding gifts are purchased the most important thing that one keeps in mind is their durability. It is usually felt that a wedding gifts should make a lasting impression.

# Gift accessories include exquisite evening bags, tote bags, handbags and clutch bags. Evening gowns and formal dresses are ideal clothing items.

# Jewelry boxes, perfumes, make-up kits and bags are among other gift articles.

# Diamonds are considered to be the ideal gift grooms can give their respective brides. Otherwise any of the above mentioned items would be considered worthy enough.

# FOR THE GROOM: Formal gifts include ties, tiepins, cufflinks (gold, silver or diamond studded ones), wristwatch and pocket watch among others. Suits and shirts are formal wear that can be given as gifts.

# Informal gifts include golf club sets, baseball sets or musical instruments like guitar.

# FOR BOTH BRIDE AND GROOM: Gift articles for both the bride and groom can include funny and naughty items. However, such gifts can be given only by those who know both of bride and groom from close quarters. Otherwise such gifts can be deemed impolite. The list includes 'just married' goggles, T-shirts, hats, caps, flip-flops and toilet paper (!). Naughty gifts can include wedding night kits, honeymoon kits, marriage certificates, towels and robes.

# DECORATIVE PIECES: Such gifts help the couple beautify their homes. Paintings, wall hangings and show pieces come under this category.

# PERSONILIZED GIFTS: Names or even photographs of the bride and groom can be embossed on a variety of items like pillow cases, pillows, albums, wedding plates, photo frames etc. to give a personal touch to the gifts.

# FRESH FLOWERS: Sweet smelling flowers are a natural choice for any occasion. Flowers impart joy to both the sender and receiver. To enhance the impact of the wedding gift you have selected, send some fresh flowers along with it. They are bound to catch the eye of the couple.

Problems - A Gift

It is a little known fact that Algebra, Trigonometry and Calculus originated in India-the country of the poorest of the poor. How, you might wonder, does the country with the poorest of the poor have such genius?

Mathematics is a reminder of the Law of Polarity. The Law of Polarity states that everything is on a continuum and has an opposite. Thus, there cannot be a problem without the answer being available. Imbedded in the problem lies the answer you are seeking. It is the law of mental vibrations.

India predominantly practices Hinduism, often referred to as Sanatana Dharma (a Sanskrit phrase meaning 'the eternal law'). India's population is highly connected and conversant in the Universal Laws. Thus, the Law of Polarity is a predominant mind-set. Their mind-set is a belief that there is no problem too great to solve and that every problem has a solution.

In western culture 'quick fixes' and 'easy answers' are more predominent, thus, people often abandon a problem before discovering the solution. Therefore, they miss the true gift of problem solving-i.e. the mathematics of life-also known as The Law of Polarity. Einstein said, "It's not that I'm so smart. It's just that I stay with problems longer."

You persistently attract to you what you need to discover. Thus, what you encounter is the problems you need to solve to keep yourself on the green-growing edges of your own evolvement. When you encounter an issue receive it as a compliment from the Universe. What a wonderous soul you are to have the wonderful opportunity to solve another mystery.

Today, as you move from task to task, or encounter an issue, remember to receive it as a gift. Look upon challenges and obstacles for what they really are, opportunities for exercise and growth for your brilliant mind and soul.

The Gift of a Dead Body

Looking back, I never thought that a brief encounter with a dying man in India would have shaped the foundation of my career, and lay the groundwork for my spiritual journey. After 20 years, I now see how everything fell into place.

"Why don't you sit with that man over there - he's dying." I heard these welcoming words from a man who motioned me to a cot at Mother Theresa's Home for the Destitute and Dying in Calcutta (now Kolkata). While backpacking in India as an impressionable 24 year old, I decided to volunteer at the shelter. I'd never seen a dying person, and wasn't sure what to do, so I simply did as I was told. In a stark cement floored room filled with 40 other people lying on their cots, I sat on a wooden stool next to a gaunt man. His eyes opened wide as he gazed into mine. He began speaking to me in Bengali. I tried to explain that I didn't understand, but he continued talking. Then he reached for my hand and instinctively, I placed his hand in mine. His other arm grabbed my arm and I clutched it. Then he died. The heat and animating force left and his body grew cold and rigid, eyes vacant. He was gone. Where did his energy go?

Einstein's Theory of Conservation flashed through my brain: Energy can never be destroyed, only transformed. For example, if you burn a piece of paper, it changes into carbon and gas. Who or what is he now? Where is his energy? Where did he go? These questions raced through my mind as we carried his lifeless form down a narrow street interrupting a group of children playing soccer. Quietly, the children stopped and inspected his feet, hands and hair poking out from beneath the sheet as we made our way past them. Then they quickly resumed their game as we brought his body to the wood pyre to burn. This is not how children would react to seeing a dead body in America.

Not only is death more visible in India, and therefore viewed differently, but life there is also experienced quite radically from the Western perspective. Most Indians have a distinct concept about who they are. They are a soul that uses a body, rather than a body that has a soul. The difference in identity is significant. One identity doesn't die, the other one does. Primarily identifying as a soul promotes an expanded view of oneself and life.

What's animating this body? Who are we? Why are we here? Long after my return home, my experience in Calcutta churned these questions in my mind for years. Eventually, I stumbled upon my first book on past life regression: Michael Newton's Journey of Souls. My body pulsed with excitement, and I knew that this was the work that I wanted to do...something that glimpsed and shed light on our larger identity and purpose.

Years later, I learned that the question "Who or what am I?" had an even deeper purpose. Ramana Maharshi, one of India's enlightened sages, would instruct his students to ask this self-inquiry as a means of stopping incessant mind chatter while awakening to, and resting back into their ultimate nature of presence/awareness. The mind is unable to grasp what our highest identity is, so the question results in a quiet, blank mind without an answer. This silence offers a momentary glimpse of our deepest self, beyond the mind's ability to label and comprehend - pure awareness forever anchored in the here and now.

I cannot say whether or not my dying stranger/friend considered my presence a gift in the last several minutes of his life, however he gave me an immeasurable gift that has been the guiding force of not only my career, but my life.

How to Make and Send Rakhi to India For Kids

On this rakhi festival let us learn the technique of making Rakhi for the Kids.

Before you start, keep the following list of tools and items ready with you -

Accessories like small toys, Cartoon Characters (small cuttings), Funny Stickers or pictures like Spider man, Pooh, Hanna Montana, Mickey or Krish etc.

Glue or Fevicol.

Raw silk Thread or ready Silk motifs.

Silk ribbon of different colours.

Sharp Knife /Blade/Pair of scissors.

Glittered Stars or beads.

It is fairly simple to make Rakhi for Kids. For new bees it may take make 30 minutes to make Rakhi. For professionals it is barely 10 minutes activity.

Take approximately 12 inches of two strips of narrow satin ribbon of different colours. You may choose the colours based on what kind of motif you are going to use in the centre.

Stick both pieces of ribbon alongside each other so as both the colours are visible. This gives strength to the Rakhi and makes it look more beautiful once it is complete.

Now take the thick bunch of silk thread.Tie it at one end with raw thread and brush it hard so that it becomes soft. Now hold it from the knot and spread the threads carefully and evenly to give it a nice round shape of a Sun flower. You may shred the extra uneven threads.

Alternately you can use readily available silk motifs as a base if you want to avoid above work. Once it is done, Take the band made out of satin ribbons and stick the above made sunflower/readymade silk motifs with the glue in the middle as a base for sticking toys or stickers etc.

Now your base for the Kid's Rakhi is ready, enhance it by sticking toys, stickers or pictures etc of your choice on the motif or sunflower silk base.

Also glue glittered stars or beads along the rakhi band.

Leave your Rakhi to dry now and wrap it in a cellophane sheet. Preserve the Kid's Rakhi for Rakshabandhan.
